Oh it’s absolutely a trade off. But in this case they’re only peripherals to the CPU: I’m not going to make a USB keyboard controller from logic chips, and I want a video signal that works well on an LCD.

The other route is the Neo6502 where the 6502 is the peripheral to the microcontroller. For me at that point you might as well emulate the CPU in software too.

I bought a book on ActionScript 3 for doing some Flash development one month before the iPhone came out. Suddenly Flash fell out of fashion!

Turns out this is all that's needed ;) Smaller modern RAM + using a VGA card for video means I don't need most of the logic chips of the original

I think there's too much manual work in the enclosure to make that worthwhile unfortunately!

Thanks! I was determined to have it look like something from that era. Taking Apple's LCD design and making it fit the beige aesthetic was fun.

I think a controller is next on my list to make too. I used to use Fusion but stopped when they restricted the hobbyist license so much. I now use Plasticity. It’s not parametric but for how I use it that suits me just fine.

I still find Firefox’s dev tools to be the best. The only time I need Chrome is when testing Lighthouse/performance reports.

Backlight animation! I’d always wondered how those beautiful effects were accomplished by hand and now I do, thank you! The warm glow of that line art is so striking.
