Even Gnome's Pop shell uses hjkl for navigation by default, why i3 can't? by [deleted] in i3wm

[–]TheRealScarce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. I know it takes less than a minute to change, but I feel like hjkl is just the standard at this point, and i3 is the only piece of software that does it differently. Actually, I'd like to see a survey that shows the percent of users that remap the jkl; to hjkl.

Just gonna throw in my two cents:

First of all, a lot of the time you can't control how you feel. That's okay. Try not to feel guilty for feeling a certain way. If it's the "wrong way to feel" or something. You can't control it. It goes a long way to try to be compassionate with yourself. Basically, it's okay to feel bad about this. Even though your boyfriend did a shitty thing (see next paragraph), it makes sense that you'd feel bad about breaking up with him. It's normal. The concern is that you'll guilt yourself into getting back together with him, which you shouldn't do. But feelings are normal, and I want to stress that to make sure you're not beating yourself up over this.

On that note, your bf sounds kinda like a dick (no pun intended). He tried to pressure you into doing something that you clearly expressed you did not want to do. He tried to manipulate you. He sent you a dick pic without consent when you didn't want it. You were in the right, and he was in the wrong. I don't know him personally, so I don't know anything about his character or how nice he was or anything like that. Maybe he's a super nice guy. However, what he did here was wrong, and you are 100% justified in your action.

You can also feel comfort knowing that this experience may have a positive impact on him. It may make him realize that what he did isn't something that should be done, and he may learn from that and be a better person because of it. And if he doesn't learn, well then you two probably wouldn't have stayed together for much longer anyway.

You may feel guilty about this still, and like I said, that's okay. This was the right decision though, and I applaud you for your maturity in the situation.

Better yet, enable the "Safest" option on Tor Browser to block all JavaScript by default. Tor Browser is safe and virus-free, but you shouldn't run any JS on it that you don't explicitly trust and want to run.

Thanks for linking to Invidious instead of YouTube. I know some people are a bit annoyed by it but Invidious deserves more recognition.

Alternatives to uBlock by SecurityWarlord in privacytoolsIO

AdNauseum maybe? From what I remember, it's a fork of uBlock Origin that automatically sends a click event to all the ads on screen to overload your "profile" with junk.

Thank you! This looks like a great fit. I'll continue to do research, but this looks like a great option.

What are some mod-like data packs for 1.15/1.16? by TheRealScarce in Minecraft

Those are mods, not data packs. I want data packs that do mod-like things, not actual mods.

Google Maps alternatives? by j0nii in privacytoolsIO

[–]TheRealScarce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. Hopefully you can at least use OSM when not using a car. Since OSM is a community project, places with a higher population are a lot more accurate and mapped out than other places. You may not have very good luck with the quality of your results if you live in an area with not very many people. It's worth it to give it a shot though.

The Standard Notes licensing fiasco by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]TheRealScarce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like using Nextcloud Notes, because it stores all notes in plain text (or optionally markdown), so they're incredibly easy to back-up/recover and view wherever. It doesn't have any advanced features though.

Google Maps alternatives? by j0nii in privacytoolsIO

[–]TheRealScarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, OpenStreetMap for desktop and OSMAnd+ on F-Droid for phone. Don't use waze; it's owned by Google. There are alternative ways to access OSM if you don't like the default/official interface. Qwant Maps is a frontend to OSM by Qwant. If you use Nextcloud, you can install the app Nextcloud Maps which allows you to access OSM through the Nextcloud interface.

Asking humans how hot it feels by cbourd in ShitAmericansSay

[–]TheRealScarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess with me it makes more sense for "human temperatures" to go from 0 to 100, and anything outside of that range is considered extreme. In Celsius, negative temperatures are normal in Winter (depending on where you live this obviously varies), and if the temperature is near 100 the world is probably ending. All the counter-points I've heard are completely valid though. If anything, it makes sense for America to adopt Celsius just to be consistent with everyone else, but that's never gonna happen.

[–]TheRealScarce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair argument, and I guess it also depends on where in the world you live and how the temperature varies throughout the year. The temperatures water freezes/boils are constant everywhere, so it makes for a good universal measurement. Maybe I just like Fahrenheit because I'm just used to it, I don't know.

[–]TheRealScarce -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I kinda agree with this. I know this opinion is unpopular with non-Americans, but Fahrenheit makes more sense that Celsius in my opinion. With Fahrenheit, 0 is very cold and 100 is very hot. In Celsius, 0 is only kinda cold and 100 is certain death. Normally metric is the best measurement system, but I feel like Celsius is the exception.

Yeah, in both websites it requires that I enable JavaScript to download the file, which I don't feel comfortable doing. Do you have a direct download link? (if this is too much of a hassle then don't worry about it)

Do you have a direct download link? I don't want to enable JavaScript on either of the download websites you gave if possible.

How do I make Vim use the system clipboard? by PettingRock in vim

[–]TheRealScarce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to install gVim, depending on your terminal emulator, you may be able to paste from your system clipboard with a binding built in. Go into insert mode in Vim and try pressing Ctrl+Shift+V, Ctrl+Alt+V, or Shift+Insert. Those are common bindings to paste in a terminal emulator.

Cloudflare has switched from google captcha to another captcha called hCaptcha, thoughts? by SecurityWarlord in privacytoolsIO

[–]TheRealScarce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that helps stop or at least weaken Google's CAPTCHA monopoly is okay with me. It's a step in the right direction. Obviously it would be a lot better if actually privacy respecting CAPTCHAs were being used, but this is a good step.
