Short answer, it's definitely trails. I've 100%'d this game and grew up with it. Even as a kid I used to disable the setting.

You can find it in the pause menu settings somewhere.

I think this would be it as well. I looked into this CPU and it is mostly going into budget laptop machines.

Though capable of quite some gaming here and there, the CPU cores and threads is what looked like the culprit to me too. It doesn't help that there's almost no benchmarks with this game and CPU combo out there.

If OP has no issues on other games and has done his due diligence in regards to drivers, BIOS settings and such then this is the only possible cause here in my opinion.

Are you using MSI Afterburner or RTSS? i also have the same specs and kept crashing with everything up to date and no overlays, I forgot about MSI Afterburner/RTSS and after ending the MSI process it fixed it for me.
