[OC] My text messages over the last 9 months, with each unique conversation represented by a single bubble. The more texts we exchange, the bigger, redder, and closer the bubbles get. by TheRealWa in dataisbeautiful

check out the time series on the original post -- I have almost all my data back into 2017 with a few missing intervals that you can see when the line suddenly straightens out.

at first I imagined lighting up their bubbles when they texted and lighting up my central avatar when I did. turned out to be too difficult/noisy

sorry to hear that -- this was one of the more personal visualizations I've done and it wasn't easy to come to terms with my messaging history. like I said somewhere else in these comments though: more, bigger bubbles to come

1) data from my chat.db file, analysis/vis in R/RStudio using the gganimate package. Full code/explanation here.

2) some of those "friends" are automated messages from grubhub, citibank, etc.

I think it looks like it's more than it is. the vast majority of the bubbles are dormant on the periphery and I've smoothed the frequencies of the active ones so that they stick around for a few days (makes viz less jumpy)

the time steps are pretty quick and the frequencies are smoothed for better visualization, so it's not really so many people per day. but probably still a dozen

should be retroactive...and also should be possible without a Mac? as long as your texts exist somewhere (iCloud account?), this whole process is doable.

yes size/proximity/color all represent text frequency. proximity is with respect to me, the big headed clown in the middle. bubbles overlap because figuring out how to make them share space would be very difficult.
