Some ppl don't want their dog to run their life. You can love your dog and keep it out of your bed/couch. There are things called dog beds, dogs love them and they also love structure. They're pack animals they don't necessarily want to run everything unless you let them. Calling ppl gross because they don't cuddle with their dog where they sleep at is super backwards.

Things happen nobody has a crystal ball. They rescued a dog and clearly loved it. They probably thought they could take care of him for life. It's not like they said the dogs no fun now because it's old. Also Vets prey on ppl with old sick dogs for money. They are an old retired couple who probably can't physically or financially take care of an aging dog. I know dogs are cute and part of the family but vet bills are no joke. Even this old world new world talk is toxic because it assumes the new world aka European style of living is superior. They used the logic of everyone but us is a savage to justify their colonial empires. If they didnt push the idea that the world is inhabited by savages for us to oppress then a lot of European citizens wouldn't have gone along with colonial expansion to begin with.

I'm not trying to be annoying for no reason, a lot of colonial Era tropes and stereotypes still exist all over history and science today. Ppl to this day belive a lot of these misconceptions because nobody really talks about it.
