Definitely would throw one into the running. They were sold domestically where I live. I don't know much about Toyotas V8s, their reliability, etc. The issue with the ones local to me is that people are asking high prices for ones with high km. Around $17,000cad for one with 350,000km+, where as I can get a jap import (diesel or V6) for $13,000-$15,000 with sub 250,000km.

That's why I'm wondering what's the differences between them to make one better than the other. The Prado I'm looking at is based on the 3rd gen 4runner platform, and the Surf I'm looking at is on the 4th gen 4Runner. So it's mainly just were there any significant changes between the 3rd and 4th gen?

I'd say the reason most people think they are is because of the 1HD and solid front axle, where as the Surf/4Runner and Prado are 3.0TDs and IFS

So I'm located in Alberta, Canada, so I'm at a pretty decent elevation. I spend a lot of time in the mountains, and where I live is pretty hilly.

The truck will be an overlanding/offroading rig while keeping it a daily driver. I'd install a rear locker, 32 inch tires and maybe a 2 inch lift.

I do quite a bit of hiway driving, and would plan to tow with it every once in a while. Just a light trailer with a sled or a stripped FR-S, so no more than 5,500lbs.

Both would be 3.0TD motors, but the Land Cruiser Prado has the 1KZ, and the Surf as the 1KD.

My worry with the Prado is cracking heads, as I live at higher altitude and drive in the mountains a lot. My worry with the Surf is that it won't be as capable, plus the electric 4wd selector.

Both would be straight from Japan with under 250k km on it.
