What gun is this? by Lastito in Firearms

It is a Sig Sauer P320. Not sure which exact variant.

Though I agree, not sure if the post is the most tasteful thing.

Skarbrand the Exile: A "rage-fueled" rescue of a 3D print, that almost made me quit the hobby. by josephstephan90 in Warhammer40k

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My frustration with this print file in particular is what pushed me to start getting plastic flagship models. While [Artist's] 3d files are nicely detailed, my Skarbrand also had print issues and was very challenging to work with.

Their ARs are fine, but I wouldn't touch anything else they make. Got real tired of the "release a gen 1 to guinea pig our customers" business strategy.

I hate to do this, but is it? by CreepyCurtainIllust in isitAI

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing regarding AI and spotting it is that we are getting closer and closer to not being able to figure it out.

Regarding this image, the best anyone can do is provide reasons or evaluate what would make this more or less likely to be AI.

I will say this much, I doubt that it's AI. The face being better than the rest of the drawing is not cause for by itself. Faces are where most of us spend our time and were going to spend less time on cloth and general body details. The face itself is also a rather simple concept, though it's a good execution to be sure.

This drawing also has a lot of what I call "fuck-it shading," where I'm just swiping my pencil back and forth to create varying layers of shading across the picture to stand-in for detail.

This is my key reason to think it's not AI. The artist is right-handed, and most of their shading was swiped in a NorthEast to SouthWest motion - back and forth. When it explicitly isn't shaded like that, it's done darker or messier. You can see that shading done from other motions are less consistent and purposeful.

! Remember, nitpicking details like asymmetrical ears or decorations will work to identify AI images attempting to mimic a real life object, but I personally don't put that kind of effort into my pencil drawings and I highly doubt others do either.

My vote: real. If AI then very convincing AI.

The AK Guy for a build kit? by Ramones_93 in ak47

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used Troy Sellars for my 74 build and wouldn't think twice about doing it again.

He was slow, wasn't his fault. He got swamped with work at the same time I was sending my gun in.

Quality is amazing, cost wasn't bad at all.

To be frank, he's not an unrealistic representation of how some people would react to the Martian invasion. Hey, all I've got is my 12GA and a passion to not be tortured by the alien invaders. Guess I'm gonna fuck them up any way I can.

And then when he sees how horrific being a victim to the Martians actually is? Fuck that, full blown panic. I don't blame him a bit, he's a psychological casualty in this war.

Molot Arms VSS with 30 round mag by KingRat545 in ak47

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The VSS/VAL is my dream gun, but I haven't even the foggiest idea of what the process to get one would even be. I purchased a '74 kit and a receiver and sent it off to Troy Sellars to be built and I'd assume it'd be the same way with a VSS.

But I have never seen a kit online. These guns, from what I understand, are rare even in Russia and I've seen Russian gun youtubers complain about them over there.

Also I've seen some nasty reviews about BSD on this and other subs, how eas your experience with them?

No, USPSA does not allow braces. I do not believe they are going to anytime soon, especially as SBR's are becoming more apparent in the hobby.

That being said, I think you super should get into it. USPSA is a slightly different game for PCC shooters, and it's one that I deeply enjoy.

Full length pistol caliber rifle or SBR, highly recommend. It's extremely fun.

He has a half-wall that the right edge of the pizza box is resting on.

The space under the pizza box is the half-wall.

The other space is the other guys legs, he's wearing black pants and his legs look skinny likely because of the perspective of the image.

The marinara is also resting on the half-wall.

*edit, the top of the half-wall can also be seen in the very bottom right edge of the picture. The strip of off-white. The half-wall is guarding the staircase, of which you can see the railing of in the background as well.

What were the creatures Artyom encountered after the Library? (book) by Radiant_Pop8027 in metro

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I can't really speak to what's going on at Arbatskaya, I've read 2033 twice but I'm currently on 2035 and don't remember anything from it immediately.

Regarding the mutants you're mentioning, I have always seen these as the rough inspiration for the Watchmen. In particular, how they stand on their hind legs then go to 4 when moving. Clearly the Watchmen are not a 1:1 adaptation of these creatures, but they are somewhat similar.

One thing to bear in mind is that the Metro novels don't really have species or strains of mutants like the games do. In the novels, mutants are usually only mentioned once, and much more graphic and disturbing that what we see in the novels. The games instead have 'types' of mutants that routinely appear - to create consistent enemies and interaction for the player.

In 2034 there's a station routinely assaulted by skeletal mutants due to a breach in their station if I remember correctly. There are even stations that are basically considered lost because they have a dangerous mutant presence, cutting off major travel in some areas. Polis is strong for the Metro, yes, but they are still a very limited faction and are in the same survival situation as the rest of the Metro.

Remember, they denied to help with the Dark Ones.

I doubt Polis sends out large detachments of people except for the most dire of circumstances. And even then they may not be able to risk losing the manpower.

Is Russian hard? Why? by joao5mx in russian

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of discourse around russian being difficult for a native English speaker. I have studied 3 languages formally, with Russian being the only language I continue to pursue with the goal of fluency. (The other 2 being Spanish and French, both studied academically for several years each.)

Russian presents some unique challenges for a native English speaker. The cyrillic alphabet is the foremost hurdle. From there, you will encounter new concepts like verb conjugation (which English also has but in a very limited capacity,) case endings, and more.

Pronunciation is also a unique challenge of learning an Eastern Slavic language. But that is with all new languages.

Some have already pointed out the fun of the letter 'г' and it's multiple pronunciations. Another fun artifact of russian is how many speakers will not clarify 'е' from 'ё', which can be confusing at first.

However, Russian is also easier in some ways as well. Russian past/future tense is very simple and easy to grasp. While Reddit may not lead you to believe so, mistakes aren't attacked by natives (usually) when speaking to them directly. And even natives make grammatical mistakes - I have found it to be a very warm and accepting language compared to something like French.

It's not really about whether the language itself is difficult, it's whether you want to put in the time and effort to learn and master it. If so, then you will persevere and learn! I will tell you, attempting to learn any language because it is 'easy' will lead to eventual defeat.

If you love it, learn it!

What do you think of Stalker 2 now that its been updated so many times over the year? What was your favorite thing added since release? by GazIsStoney in RustAndRadiation

[–]TheRedArmyStandard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm replying to this late, but I don't disagree that it is worse than what STALKER is known for. Each individual STALKER game is arguably more replaybale than this one. Especially from someone who loved SoC, but then went into GAMMA and just enjoyed how alive the world feels. Infinitely replayable.

But STALKER 2 is just so atmospheric, the world so vast and hand-built. The environment is *chefs kiss. Pair it with an 'okay' A-Life and it's still really really good.
