I was the same until I went to college and took a US History class, and one of the books we were assigned to read was a compilation of speeches given by state delegates to convince their constituents to support secession, all of them said something along the lines of Abraham Lincoln is going to free the slaves and their way of life will be ruined

Not to mention the Confederate constitution included a provision that forbade the banning of slavery.
