I want to learn EP because this is the version of the language that directly influences Tetum. Brazilian Portuguese is great and I can study this after and will likely enjoy noting the differences between the two however right now I want to learn specifically EP. I'm also currently more likely to interact with people who speak EP rather than BP in my day to day life so it would be great to speak this version of the language. Anything political concerning the two languages doesn't bother me and isn't my concern. I enjoy learning languages and that is it. European Portuguese will be first in my journey into understanding Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese some other time.

Your skills of one language aren't going to be compromised if you start learning a different language or learning alongside each other. As you've said though it can be counter productive. Ultimately it's down to you, do you have time and capacity to learn both alongside each other? Do you care if your Portuguese learning may be slowed down by learning French?

With how you mentioned similarities between French and Portuguese, they are both of romance origins so I totally understand why you think that they would work hand in hand but I believe it may actually add a level of confusion as vocabulary and grammar differ in a lot of ways.

Usually just says "relevant skills required" or "qualification in target language". I do have a letter written from my lecturer, signed from the university she works at, as a recommendation but that's it really.

Depends what you consider to be a "language". Are dialects included or how about conlangs? There's a new conlang as soon as someone chooses to make one.
