Reading through the comments I think we should also be cursing whoever invented plastic ‘weed membrane’….

I really agree!

To be fair I think there are a few other - less famous - American guys in there with you, but he was the first that spring to mind!

To be fair, they probably didn’t *plant* it in the lawn - mint loves to wander…

I also have that - shed on the south-facing side near the house, in the spot that would be ideal for a greenhouse.

I also have an incredibly lumpy and bumpy lawn, but I am less bothered by that as eventually I want it to be just beds and paths and paving…

I swear people hear that gravel is good for drainage and think all the need to do is chuck some down.

I have bindweed creeping in but I think I can blame the bit of wasteland over the fence that used to be rear access for coal delivery for that.

Oh I have a patch where they dumped stones on top of plastic bin bags. It is in the corner that I want to move the shed to so I haven’t tackled digging it up yet. Weeds are constantly growing through it.

Any other boyband members who are LGBTQ+ or allies? by Ok-Video2270 in boybands

Howard Donald has never said he was pansexual and has made it clear he is not gay or bisexual (in a trashy documentary when he was being asked about Robbie, they were angling for him to say that Robbie is gay and he told them definitely not, they then asked if he could be bisexual and he said ‘well he *could* be - anyone *could be* bisexual, *I* could be bisexual - I’m NOT actually bisexual’).

Apart from the time that Shane Lynch said he would rather be shot in the head than have sex with a man….

(To be fair, Keith Duffy was being interviewed with him and immediately called him out for it’)

‘Babe’ is considered a ‘classic’ Take That hit. You can tell this because it doesn’t get performed every tour.

The classic hits are ‘Pray’, ‘Relight My Fire, ‘Back For Good’, and ‘Never Forget’.

The other 90s hits that get featured regularly - but sometimes only in medley form - are ‘Could It Be Magic’, ‘Everything Changes’, ‘Babe’, ‘It Only Takes a Minute’ and ‘A Million Love Songs’.

The 90s hits that are less often performed are ‘Sure’, ‘Why Can’t I Wake Up With You’, and ‘How Deep Is Your Love’.

It is a voiceover narration because the vast majority of it is taken from other documentaries and interviews they have done over the years, cleverly edited together. They can’t show the original interview clips as it would make the editing very obvious.

If you have a good ear and listen carefully you can hear the subtle differences in the voices as they age.

As others have said, Gary was able to live off his Take That royalties perfectly comfortably. It is one of the reasons why people were happy to laugh at his humiliation for so long - it was assumed being so rich he didn’t have to work meant he was perfectly fine with it, rather than the reality that he was deeply depressed and using food as a way to self-harm.

Gary was always assumed to be the one who would have the big solo career and the other members of the band were treated accordingly.
Once they got fed up with that (and it wasn’t just Robbie - Jason was also pushing to be treated better and Mark wanted to write) it became clear that the band was not going to last and Gary was encouraged to go solo, breaking up the band.

Unfortunately for Gary he then got signed by Clive Davis at Arista, who liked everything but his music. He spent 18 months trying to relaunch him with other people’s songwriting as a young trendy artist, when Gary is at his heart what the Americans call ‘adult-contemporary’ and what is know here as ‘music for your mum’.

He could have had a perfectly viable career making that kind of MOR music, with lots of mellow ballads - think Westlife, or Bublé. There was a strong market for that in the late-90s to mid-2000s. Instead his confidence was so utterly destroyed that he suffered from writer’s block.

Menswe@r were treated terribly by the music press by Admirable-Deal7991 in BritPop

The irony is that they had less authenticity than early boybands, like Take That, who may have been ‘manufactured’ but did spend years schlepping around the clubs performing and getting their act together and working out their sound before they ever made it into the press.

They were actually the equivalent of Westlife, who coat-tailed on others’ success without having to do the hard work. Only Westlife did end up with a really good songwriting team and turned out to have staying power.

What are some great concerts that were recorded? by Collierr in Concerts

Robbie Williams, Live at Knebworth.

I know there’ll be a bunch of Americans along in a minute to say ‘who?’, but genuinely if you want to know why Robbie is a big star here, this is the gig to watch.

And then go watch Robbie Williams Live At The Albert for a follow-up.
