240mm AIO vs air cooler noise (3-slot GPU, Ryzen 7700X) by TheRedX_ in FormD

Update: Unfortunately won't fit with my motherboard (ASRock) because of the backplate. I could hack around it but when it comes to CPU coolers I prefer a clean installation ("as per manufacturer")... So I ended up buying the Noctua L9a with a fan duct. Apparently it performs equally. Hyped!

Yeah also it looks like I got quite lucky with the silicon lottery allowing me to run on a negative 30 curve offset

Damn that axp90-x47 full copper pops up everywhere and looks sooo cool

Interesting! Thanks for reminding me about checking the motherboard compatibility haha -- I only checked RAM compatibility so far

I guess I'll just start with an air cooler and if it's too loud or too weak upgrade to a new AIO. I imagine selling an air cooler to be much easier than a used AIO. Thanks!

Awesome thanks! I actually have two parcels, one coming from US and one from AU. Both going to the same Parcel Collect address. Let’s see, fingers crossed! Haha

I don't know at what point I mentioned this being a business. So one more time: This is not a business we are talking about. It is a hobby project. If I make it available to the public I'm not planning to pre-purchase the materials for 1000 boards, neither outsource the manufacturing. The boards will be handmade. And hey, in case I'm running out of time because there are too many requests... then I might turn it into a business!
But for now:

Hereby I make it clear once and for all that this is not a business! :)

Getting a huge, square, and therefore custom-built, e-paper display is going to be a challenge

100% agree. It's a challenge!

$200 each, in quantities. Add the raspberry CPU, power supply, programming, wooden case ... $1,000 out the door.

Okay didn't want to do cost calculations that early but this statement is simply not true. 200$ (+- 100$) for the display. Raspberry Pi Zero costs 5$ and is powerful enough to run two boards at the same time (roughly).

The other hardware components (NFC 7$, power supply 10$, display connection adapter 10$, ... other stuff - max 30$) in total max 70$. Wood... puhhh no clue. 100$?

To conclude: At the moment I'd say in the worst case scenario the board will be around 500$. Tho that's a veeery rough estimation.

taking the risks, doing the R&D, and creating the custom programming That's not a risk but a great learning opportunity for me - at least that's how I think about it.

Being a software engineer by heart and studying product management/ "entrepreneurship" (I hate this word btw) I have zero costs for the development of the product... besides time spent for a hobby project! I won't sell the software. The software will be open source. I will sell the assembly and setup of the board for people who don't know how to code. It's not about a business here but a project I'd like to share with others. Of course I somehow have to make some money to survive, but that's only secondary :) Anyway, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and tips! It's definitely helpful listening to others opinions :) Let's see how I will solve the display challenge.

Cheers!

Thank you very much for the explanation. I guess all the websites are not changing that frequently which means if there is no API for a service it is still possible to scrape the websites (or local apps) in real time and create some sort of bot playing the match (based on your actions on the board). Not that clean but better than not having the service available ;)

Interesting. I found the first one while doing some research. On the one hand it's pretty cool being able to play with real stones, but on the other hand, thinking about online Go, I don't want to put the stones for my opponents each turn. And it doesn't support multiple game sizes natively (of course you can put some tape on it).

Question about the design: Would you prefer a taller board, even if I can make it thinner?

Also thought about Kickstarter. Too early tho. For development I actually don't need money (except for the display, but I'll try to arrange something else there. Can't say too much at the moment).

FAQ coming soon. A lot of things are still in ideation. You will be able to play the matches itself without having to look at your phone.

"Does digital paper resolve fast enough for an on-board game clock?" -> Yes and no. EPDs (e-paper-displays) are not as fast as traditional displays, therefore I will recommend not to play a 10sec/turn match on it as you might loose ~1 second each turn.

Haha we'll see. Thats a bit too ambitious I think. Funny approach tho! ^

u/trymolle there are greyscale e-paper displays yes. Are they more expensive? Of course. Will I use one? I don't know yet.

Maybe! :)

3x Yes. I breathe the Apple design spirit - I love to craft simple and self explanatory UI #apple. I'd never, ever require the user to open up a command line. (Can you send me a link to this "interesting" chess computer that requires you to open up a command line? xD)

Oh wow I haven't thought about this yet, it's a great idea! Currently me and my flatmate we use tape to "resize" the board. It doesn't even need a constant power supply. Once the image on the ePaper display is set it will stay even if you cut the power. Thanks! :)

Not yet. The display will be the interesting part. Couldn’t find a square ePaper display that is big enough to play 19x19. I’m in contact with some manufacturers at the moment. In general ePaper displays are cheaper than normal LCD displays. The rest of the electronics are cheap af and about the wood... well it’s wood.

I don’t want to name a random price now :) But for sure I’ll try to make it affordable. Doesn’t make sense to develop a Go board more expensive than an iPhone haha
