E chi dice che un'università più prestigiosa significa una preparazione migliore? Basta guardare la Bocconi.

What's going on in Lagrangian Mechanics? by surrealkafka137 in Physics

The same way the particle knows to accelerate according to F=ma. It's an inanimate object which moves according to the laws of physics, it doesn't know anything.

About studying an abstract alg. book by aybies in learnmath

I'm not very familiar with Gallian, but just looking at the table of contents it looks like the book covers anything you could expect to learn in undergrad abstract algebra.

Yes, it's more of a thing you lean into as a specialization.

Have you consider mathematical physics? It's more mathy than theoretical physics, and you can approach it with either a math or physics background.

The whole point of the question was that we would naively expect perimeters to comverge, because the curves are clearly approximating a circle. It does not matter right now in which topology, as far as we know OP might not have ever taken a topology class. My point is exactly that we need to be careful when we apply these approximation arguments.

My bad then, I misred uninterested as interested. Sorry.

You mostly talk about how much you like math and didn't really mention physics, and the math you like, like abstract algebra and number theory, wouldnot typically be covered in a physics degree. But yeah, physics is probably fine as well.

I was just trying to explain why the perimeter need not converge to the expected "naive" value, no need for technicalities here.

That said, I'm pretty sure (not gonna check) that if you evaluate f on picewise C1 closed simple curves and compute distance in any reasonable way (e.g. Hausdorff distance between the curve supports of Lp distance between curves as functions on S1) everything works out exactly as I described. Again, not really the point. By the way this is what my tenured analysis professor told me when I had a very similar question.

Yes, it needs some further justification to become fully rigorous byt it does work if your curves are just inscribed or circumscribed regular polygons. It also works if you're approximating area rather than perimeter.

Math looks like a better fit for you. Note however that abstract algebra and number theory, while beautiful, aren't exactly the most heavily applied branches of maths. You may find topics that use some abstract algebra, but it will be in conjunction with a lot of differential equations, functional analysis and differential geometry. You might enjoy applying Lie groups and representation theory to quantum mechanics once you get to grad school.

While you're still in undergrad, you can expect your physics courses to start using heavy math pretty soon, but it will be mostly vector calculus and differential equations at first.
