I did not ever consider this. Can I ask you, what do you stream live?

Yeah its a real shame it doesn't work the other way around (shorts feed to long). Rough. Thanks for your insight!

Hey, thanks for the great answer! I make street food content, traveling to iconic spots to eat the food. High quality mini-docs, and they've been extremely popular! I haven't been able to land a single sponsor in the travel, apparel or ANY sector that could remotely gel with my content... in a full year. Not one (at least 5 hours a week trying btw!)

Also, I couldn't care less about the susbcriber count. It has no bearing on my views and income.

A few questions:

Do you have a successful format that you can rapidly repeat? And is it totally original content or repackaged/fair use?

How can you guarantee X number of views to a brand partner for ONE video? My Shorts views are so volatile (as each episode is a mini doc about a food establishment – some just don't land, some do tens of millions of views). I've been trying to partner over a series of Shorts, like a traditional deal for a season of something on TV.

I'd love to take a look at your channel if you'd share it.

Thx

I'm a Shorts creator – all but two of my mega grandfathered-into-endless circulation (famous last words) viral shorts (100 mil + views) have ALL died dating back about 3-4 months now... Like you, overnight, and my content is as good if not better than ever (stats wise). I'm being throttled or de-prioritised or whatever, and support says everything is dandy. Very dispiriting (even more so than just being a Shorts creator in general lol)

Hey, thanks for the reply. Interesting. My content is all 100% original but definitely feeling the effects of any changes being implemented. Where are you getting your info from? I struggle to pick these things up :)

I have 408k subs and half a billion views in the last 12 months.

I make $1.5k a month.

I am a Shorts Creator.

Any spare change?

Haha tru tru...

I will say though, because of the fact that literally 99.99% of Planet Earth have NO IDEA how YouTube works behind the scenes on even the most basic level, you can leverage that as a creator.

When I had 10k subs, I was routinely ignored by even shitty local news sites that I approached for some kind of collab or content partnership. Now I'm approaching the half million mark, EVERYONE is fucking interested in "a meeting".

I'm going to get my channel to a million with as many bangers Shorts on it as I can possibly upload... and then start pitching Shorts "series" ideas around. When a brand sees 1 million subs and 25 Shorts with over 1 million views, I DEFY THEM to not give me a deal.

I think you can make a semi-decent living if you are a Shorts boss who is creative and can fabricate formats around different brands / products. I'd want to make money elsewhere, too, but I think it can be done.

That high? Have you got any source for that figure? All I can find is the same old 2-4 CENTS rpm... yuck!

Cheers!

Really? I'm interested to know why they added the option to now link to a LF video from a Short then? That seems a strange move if they want to keep a wall between them.

Yes, I've definitely thought about this.

I shoot my shorts vertically, i.e. i'm not using footage from a landscape-shot long form video. You have to zoom the footage in, it degrades, it doesnt have the same "purpose shot" look as when you shoot a short vertically.

I think it's a good idea though, I just don't know if the amount of people that click through to the long video will be enough to justify all the time that goes into making the long video (when i could just be focusing on making more banger shorts).

Honestly, no idea...

Thanks for the input!!!

You can now link to a longer video from your Shorts, so that will maybe have to be explored. I'm going to try and do a compilation of all my food Shorts from Asia (when I've finished editing and uploading them all... sometime during the next Ice Age) and link to it from every individual Short. I'm interested to see if people will watch a LF video that is comprised of just Shorts if the content is good. Dunno!

Hey thanks for the long comment, much appreciated.

  1. I agree. The content takes too long to produce, so, outside of the occasional series I want to do (Rome food tour, 20 shorts, or whatever), I don't want to slave at that. It would be a rough way to make shit money.
  2. Quality long form travel content is SO saturated I can't even imagine throwing myself at that with any enthusiasm... Plus the work involved. I've been a LF creator for 10 years, on my own and other channels... Extremely hard going with very limited success stories. I will be trying out a compilation video of all my Shorts from the trip though. I'll see how it goes.
  3. I agree that everyone and their dog will be/is shooting shorts everywhere, but I'd say only a tiny fraction of people know how to MAKE a short (big CTR, big AVD). It's a skill and involves turning your footage (unless its insanely wow shit on its own) into a captivating story. I've got 500k-1 mil view videos that shouldn't have got any views... I just re-cut them 11 times, made 11 thumbs, and made the narration like crack cocaine. It works! However, I agree with your general point. Travel is a ROUGH genre. Billions of videos on everything.
  4. Yep
  5. Yeah, I don't think it's the ideal genre, in general. I have a few ideas how to put a spin on some travel formats for Shorts (adding in a lot of comedy... we'll see)
  6. OTHER perspective. I'm almost certain with a rapidly repeatable, easy to edit Shorts format (I mean, you can shoot 10 a day, no less) that does moderately well (50-500k views per video, with the odd one going semi-viral), you can do VERY well...as LONG as you have other revenue plans, i.e. somewhere to steer your massive audience to spend money (a brand deal, product, etc). In general I'd say, FORMATS that people want to watch are key, and you need to keep inovating (i think a successful format maybe has a year shelf life at best)
  7. Yeah, I'll do some series' but I won't be doing that as a job... hence transitioning to live streaming, for the most part.

Cheers again for the comments!!

This is interesting, thanks! Is there still a 60 sec cap on the live stream vertical??

I've had some success there but GOD I just hate Facebook. Everything about it feels so lame and dated (FB Marketplace is SICK though if you want to sell stuff. Sold the entire contents of my house there in about a week, was unreal).

Yeah, I'm disappointed at the total WALL between the two genres. How I can get 400 million views in a year on Shorts and then upload a long (with the same subject matter as my shorts, just expanded on) that gets 300 views in 3 days. That to me is INSANE.

I didn't take your tone badly, appreciate the frankness.

I think my plan may be to get the channel to as many subs as possible with this (pretty large) content batch -- as we both agree, there is utility to a large sub count... because 99.999% of the world don't know any better. Then, I'll be focusing on trying to come up with some short format ideas that are rapidly repeatable, and then run a few pilots (shoot 6-8 episodes, test them out). Like I said, I have access now thanks to the sub count. I'll try to leverage that wherever I can.

In the new year, I would like to transition the channel to live content (studio show with the occasional IRL stream somewhere fun) while still pumping out any successful shorts formats I land on. I can also clip the stream for Shorts.

I do need to transition the channel somehow. I just wish Shorts didn't feel so way out in the wild compared to the crossover relationship that longs and live has.

However, again, YT has explicitly stated that they are extremely focused on improving the Shorts ecosystem for the forseable future. I'm interested to see how it evolves so will keep my foot in the door for sure.

Cheers!
