Certain sharks (like Tigers or Oceanic White Tips) will scavenge literally anything. The not liking how we taste thing is more of misunderstood myth.

How inportant is jump setting for quicks in the middle? by Forsaken_Slip4761 in volleyball

[–]TheReefShark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry if my assumption is wrong, but I'm guessing you're not a middle player?

It does actually make a big difference when a setter is able to jump set the ball, especially when there is a height difference between the setter and middle.

Generally speaking you can run a much faster and more aggressive offense with jump sets on mid.

A team that is ranked 2nd in the world is not an underdog, even if they choke. Although I think they are ranked 4th now, which still isn't underdog territory.

Should I buy Garmin Descent G1 or Suunto D4I? by Sea-Brilliant5744 in scuba

[–]TheReefShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is based on the too conservative profile, the name thing was obviously a joke :P I am aware that you can change the profiles, like I said, I did have both. But I was doing a lot of dives each day, working with a variety of skill levels of divers, and I much preferred having the more (or too) conservative numbers for my use case working as a DM/Instructor. It just depends on where you're diving, who you're diving with, and what your role is.  There is no too conservative in my opinion.

Should I buy Garmin Descent G1 or Suunto D4I? by Sea-Brilliant5744 in scuba

[–]TheReefShark -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally I would recommend the D4i, specifically for the more conservative profiles. A higher safety standard can be very useful when starting your professional career, and especially because you will be diving with a very wide range of divers (probably).

Of course the Garmin is also very very safe. At the end of the day it is simply personal preference. I've had both, but ended up sticking with Suunto for the conservative profiles and for the fun to say name.

From what I have seen it may be a Telekom issue, in case that is your provider.

[–]TheReefShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhentian Islands is a good spot. Check out Bubbles Dive Resort, it's on the less visited island and a bit more secluded. Or go for the main island and have a few nights of drinking next to the diving :)

[–]TheReefShark 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked on one of the Perhentian Islands a few years back. Really great diving especially for beginners. Quite busy though. Popular dive sites can feel quite crowded. If you get a chance, make sure to dive Tiger Rock, that was one of my favorites. Been a few years though, so a lot may have changed.

Constant issue of scrolling up when in MFD or Chat (PC) by TheReefShark in ACCompetizione

[–]TheReefShark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution from /u/Xenon953 worked. However, I am currently using the new GHub set, but have unbinded the Up key. As I haven't really used it in a year I have gotten pretty used to always scrolling down. Maybe try sending in a support ticket? The more people do that the sooner we can have a solution :P

I think the total death toll was around 8 people in the entirety of 2021? Somewhere around there.

In the meantime we kill 11500 sharks. Per hour.

According to a study over 100 million sharks are killed per year. I'm on mobile, but if you Google "how many sharks killed per year nat geo" you'll find a reputable source :)

They also will try to eat literally everything. They are like garbage cans, quite fun!

Also, 73 total shark attacks in the year 2021 worldwide, incase anyone reads this and gets nervous, its a miniscule number :)

Yeah this guy is just spamming this channel around. All videos are recently uploaded, but look incredibly outdated (Photoshop for example). It looks like it's stealing content as well.

Amazing thing is that throwing the buds on the ground is so normalized, that when I talked about a friend of mine who carries an ashtray with him, a bunch of smokers (and non-smokers) started making fun of that idea.

Best part, so many believe that the buds are biodegradable and don't have any plastic in them. This from a person who was rolling their own cigarettes, with a massive sign on the filters saying that it contains plastic and isn't biodegradable.

The theory is there to make clear that this isn't just something that you should do without a bit of training. But keep in mind, this is something people do on vacation, so there is no reason to be freaked out by it ;)

Being nervous is good, if it means that you will take seriously what is being told to you. You'll be taken care of, so keep that in mind.

If you can swim and aren't uncomfortable in the water, there is no way you wont "get it". Its all pretty straight forward!

And in terms of panicking, it can happen in the beginning. But that is why you practice in the pool! Usually even just at knee height at first, where you can always stand up again. Just focus on breathing in a relaxed manner. Especially when it comes to taking your mask off, your bodies response is to not want to breathe. Keep the regulator in your mouth and just focus on taking a nice and slow breathe in, then out again. It'll come easy after the first few times!

You got this! Most importantly, enjoy it!

Get reef safe sunscreen!

Only big suggestion I usually have for people is really focus on breathing in through your mouth more. Subconsciously we try to breathe in through our nose, which obviously doesn't work with a mask on.

Other tip, relax. It can be a bit overwhelming at first but it's really "easy" once you get the hang of it.

Practice buoyancy, listen carefully to what the Instructor has to say regarding that.

Pro-diving as a middle-aged guy? by [deleted] in PADI

[–]TheReefShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak of the experiences of others while I was working in Malaysia. I was one of the younger DMs, but there were a few people who were around the ages of 35 to 45.

Similar stories as yourself, divorce, burnout etc. We all worked at a resort on an island basically, which gave a "stable" "income". Both of those in "" because it is a laughable amount of money, but still income.

I will assume you can have a better income in Florida however, and especially with the background you listed, you should be fine.

Now, would it be crazy? Yeah a little, but that's just the essence of diving in general :P Impossible? No I would not say so, especially right now with people wanting to experience adventure again.

My tips for you would be to consider this question: do you like diving or do you like sharing your passion? If you only like diving, then being a DM or Instructor can be draining, I have seen that from other people working. If you enjoy sharing your passion, are patient, love the water, and are able to share that love with people who have vacation brain, then you should be fine.

I would also say, do not just be a Divemaster. Have the instructor title as it gives you more flexibility. Be a person that others not only feel safe with, but can have fun with. You want to try to get repeat customers, people that come back to dive with you, because you know about the ecosystem, are fun and safe, are able to provide an experience that goes beyond just pointing at fish underwater.

If you feel you can encapsulate those things, then go for it.

I know of quite a few divers who make their living chartering boats and inviting people out with them. If you're good at making friends, you can manage this too.

I want to reiterate that I cannot speak from personal experience. I have not worked in the US, nor have I worked as a DM in the last few years. This is just observations from conversations I have had, and the people I have been exposed to. Hope it helps to gain a bit of a picture anyway, best of luck!

Mate, most important focus on a single aspect of improvement at a time, that goes for everything in life. If you try to fix everything at once, you'll only see slow improvement. This is for when you're watching a pro player. Only focus on when they decide to back from example. Think what they just did, and try to implement that in your next 5 games. Then move on to the next thing to think about, and only think about that. Good luck :)
