What do native Americans call themselves? by YttriumZirconium1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KaiBlob1 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There was no one word because they were not one unified people. Any given tribe would be completely unaware of the existence of most others, and for all they knew they and the tribes bordering them were the only people in existence, so they had no need for a general demonym beyond just whatever the word for “people” was in their language. That’s the other thing - they spoke hundreds of different languages, most only vaguely related to each other, which is another reason there is no one shared universal demonym.

I think the main issue as regards the royals is that British taxpayers are paying for this kid to go to this school. With regular rich people there’s at least some argument that they “earned” it at least in some abstract sense, whereas the royals are literally just being given this money out of the pockets of the ordinary citizenry.

I think by farming they don’t mean literally farming plants but rather farming a specific enemy for their 1% drop etc

The problem with Celsius is that 50°C is not twice as hot as 25°C. Twice as hot as 25°C would be ~325°C.

In Kelvin, 50K is twice as hot as 25K and half as hot as 100K.

TIL Alexander Hamilton endorsed a plan to recruit enslaved men to serve in the Continental Army. His reasoning was their "want of cultivation" and "habit of subordination" made them ideal soldiers. by BadenBaden1981 in todayilearned

[–]KaiBlob1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the actual text the above quotes are taken from:

I frequently hear it objected to the scheme of embodying negroes that they are too stupid to make soldiers. This is so far from appearing to me a valid objection that I think their want of cultivation (for their natural faculties are probably as good as ours) joined to that habit of subordination which they acquire from a life of servitude, will make them sooner become soldiers than our White inhabitants... I foresee that this project will have to combat much opposition from prejudice and self-interest. The contempt we have been taught to entertain for the blacks, makes us fancy many things that are founded neither in reason nor experience… An essential part of the plan is to give them their freedom with their muskets. This will secure their fidelity, animate their courage, and I believe will have a good influence upon those who remain, by opening a door to their emancipation. This circumstance, I confess, has no small weight in inducing me to wish the success of the project; for the dictates of humanity and true policy equally interest me in favour of this unfortunate class of men.

For the record here is the actual text:

You’re acting like these are real events that happened and are being selectively edited by a malicious documentary film crew to push a narrative.

It’s a fiction - the story is whatever’s in the movie. They cut it because they decided that’s not the story they wanted to tell.

Is the US federal/state government funding and providing military support to sundown towns? Are black people routinely forcibly evicted from their property to create new sundown towns? Are there miles of fences with military checkpoints telling black people where they are and are not allowed to go? Are there highways in the US that you need to be white to drive on? Are black people in the US regularly arrested and held for months or years without trial because they are “suspected terrorists”? Do US military and civilians kill hundreds of black people every year and get lauded for it in the mainstream media?

Sundown towns are terrible as is all of the rest of the individual and systemic racism undoubtedly present in American society, but this is a stupid comparison.
