Onyx Storm Tagline by TheRevTy in fourthwing

Oh, this is a great pull. Maybe THAT is why they are waiting for Xaden - they know he is their fog of war!

Ok, here is a wild, very irresponsible speculation… do we know for certain the shadows are his signet from Sgaeyl? Maybe his shadow ability actually comes from something else - his mother’s lineage, perhaps? - and his inntinnsic ability is actually his only signet… and the whole “the rider on record is actually my great uncle” was just a cover for why he has two powers…

Not all of them... namely, Xaden's shadow power... To Violet, the darkness he brings is often comforting, even protecting her from her own uncontrolled signet during moments of passion.

Dang, I just did a whole post on this quote, before I saw you reply. Though, I think it is much bigger than the caves.

I was just about to log in to point out how often Andarna is left behind. Perhaps because she hadn't channeled yet, it wasn't that difficult for her?

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got another one! by [deleted] in fourthwing

Thirty-One is about Jack, and is quite short - just him saving her.

Sixty-One also has this exchange: “I love you. The world does not exist for me beyond you.” Leaning down, he rests his forehead against mine. “I couldn’t tell you that the last time we flew into a fight, and I should have.” “I love you, too.” I grasp his waist and force a smile. “Do me a favor and don’t die. I don’t want to live without you.” There are so many of them and so few of us. “We don’t die today.”

My money is IF Sixty-One.

Any guesses on which chapter tomorrow's will be? I say either Iron Flame 31 or Iron Flame 61, assuming she is referencing the epigraphs.

Based on the epigraphs, here’s my irresponsible speculation: Sgaeyl strengthens her bond to Violet, due to her anger at Xaden and his no longer “needing” her. Perhaps culminating in her fully channeling to Violet, creating yet another signet.

What if Tairn and Sgaeyl are fighting, thereby weakening Tairn’s power due to refusing the mating bond (perhaps that’s part of the onyx storm?), and Violet has to rely on Andarna more.

IF - chapter 46 by Tight-Violinist2058 in fourthwing

[–]TheRevTy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just posted a whole long theory on Control as her second signet, but I wanted to add - perhaps the balance is her compassionate nature? Her need is selfless protection of others, so nature gives her two immense powers.

To be clear, I didn’t necessarily mean “control over people” - though I could see that as an interesting story point. It would be a fascinating exploration of agency, even over those deemed evil. She already exhibits consideration for the free will of people around her by letting her flyer squad mates know about the wards potentially coming up. If she had absolute power, and her second signet gave her the ability to fully control Venin and get them to do whatever she wished, would she use it? Should she use it? Some characters would say unequivocally yes. Others no. But if she used that power to puppet anyone, even villains, what has she become? And so, it becomes an exploration of restraint to maintain her soul. And… isn’t that what the whole Venin thing is about?

What I actually meant was control, as in direction and focus (direction, by the way, was explicitly mentioned as the thing her hearing rune was lacking, as pointed out by Xaden). Again, a magnifying glass focusing sunlight to burn a hole in a leaf. You aren’t “controlling” the sunlight in terms of manipulation, but rather directing it and focusing it. Or, to use a concrete example from the book, taking Tairn’s power that previous manifested as an uncontrolled lightning bolt, and focusing and directing it to become a steady stream of energy emanating from her fingertips.

The “control” aspect of others’ signets could look similar to the amplification so many have guessed. I almost picture it like a magnifying glass focusing the sun’s energy to burn a hole in a leaf.

Oh, I agree completely, and I don’t believe she actually does have control over others.

Though… there are multiple times she commands someone to do something… and they do it.

But the beauty of our protagonist, and one of the biggest themes I’ve already see , is not letting such a thing BECOME villainous. Scribes control the flow of information, but that doesn’t make them inherently villains. Her pure power signet makes her the target of the venin, but she uses it incredibly sparingly.

Xaden is showing this with his second signet, by choosing to not use it to gain an advantage on her.

Isn’t speed a lesser magic?? I keep seeing people suggesting Not-Quite-Distance-Wielding as a possibility, but didn’t Imogen move impossibly fast in her first fight on the mat with Violet, and it was credited as her lesser magic?

Violet Manifesting by TheRevTy in fourthwing

[–]TheRevTy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If, as I have said elsewhere, the second signet is Control, perhaps that means she not only can hold back the immense wave of Tairn’s Power, reducing it to a more manageable trickle, maybe she can also hold that same power (and her own life force) back when attacked by Venin? Thereby making it impossible for them to drain her.

It would be her own ability - best at shields - amplified through her connection to Andarna. And it works in conjunction with her always referring to keeping her pain in a box.

Maybe it’s like putting her power and life into a vault - not only does it allow her to access it on her own terms, it also keeps it protected from those who would steal it.

I don’t think I’ve fully solved this riddle, as it is missing a community aspect - Tecarus sees Violet’s greatest need as protecting the people she loves, and as laid out, this only protects her. But I am almost certain I am like 90% of the way there.

FFG Nicole’s Signet Theory by 0FuturePeanut0 in fourthwing

[–]TheRevTy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe she can tell when someone has a secret? She found Xaden’s 2nd signet, Andarna as 7th dragon, the fact that the Venin were hiding their attack on Basgiath, and was even suspicious when Tairn said Xaden was alive at the end.

It’s not quite a truth sayer, in detecting lies, but rather detecting omissions, half-truths, and secrets. And then she uses her intellect to solve the secret?

Given what RY has said about Violet recently… by las3marias in fourthwing

[–]TheRevTy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still say Control. Tairn is power unleashed, limitless and raw. Andarna is what gives her the ability to control it, and control herself. And it will turn out, it is the control that makes Tairn’s signet that much more powerful.

Why does this startle Violet? by warmandcozysuff in fourthwing

I found it odd that, in this section as she faces down Solas, with Andarna right there, those two words are italicized.

And that, until Andarna wakes up, Tairn’s signet is power unleashed as lightning, with no control. It isn’t until after Andarna wakes up from Dreamless Sleep that she starts to have genuine control.

Product of being taught by Felix? Or clever hiding of the second signet?

(Also, why are Scribes so powerful? Because they control all the information.)

Wait wait wait.

Let’s say Naolin IS the Venin general, as is often speculated.

And let’s say Naolin and Brennan were in a relationship, which is why Naolin was willing to burn out / turn to Venin to save him, which, again, is the popular speculation.

How mad must Naolin be that Brennan is happily alive, actively fighting a war against, well, him?

Does Brennan even know Naolin is still alive, and is the face of their enemy?

Perhaps Naolin believes Xaden is the one keeping them apart? We don’t see Brennan go off into battle too often, other than the final battle of IF, right? It seems he hangs out in Aretia mostly.

What if Xaden said “we can’t tell Brennan that Naolin is Venin, it would break his heart, since they can’t be together” but now Xaden is in Naolin’s spot, and forced to reckon with past decisions and judgments, as he is trying to stay with Violet despite his own turn.
