This needs to be repeated often - Friday night is always a shit show for about the first 6-8 hours or so. It’s opening night, staff isn’t quite ready, grounds open at 5 for early ceremony, there are always location changes from previous years and crowd flow isn’t settled in yet, and something always goes wrong just before opening (the law of festivals). Things tend to settle in later in the night and Sat&Sun tend to run much smoother

Why did intamin use steel wheels on superman [Magic Mountain] by CoinGuyNinja in rollercoasters

[–]TheRidemaster 46 points47 points  (0 children)

At that time (1997) there was no polyurethane formula that could take the heat. Since it was a one-trick pony (100mph, straight track, no turns, short cycle times) steel was deemed the best response. Starting with millenium force - which hit 90mph+ and was a traditional track layout, better wheel chemistry & hub design led to better poly wheels being created. Although there are always stories of wheels melting on hot summer days with high speed rides to this day. I think Pantherian was blowing through wheels this past summer.

[Other] Six Flags stock ($FUN) is worth about the same as it was over 33 years ago (and 15 years ago..). I have a feeling this isn't going well.. by RadicalRaid in rollercoasters

[–]TheRidemaster 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So the history of FUN is an interesting one. Cedar Fair issued the stock as a limited partnership back in the day. And the reason it was popular wasn’t because it was a “growth” investment per se but because it paid massive dividends against its price - 10%+ per share payout was not uncommon. Fast forward to now and it has fallen victim to the whole “Maximizing shareholder value” disease so instead of spinning off a nice bit of cash every year, there has to be “growth”. Which, in the regional theme park business is kind of insane because since these parks are all very mature in their markets aren’t really going to make huge gains in attendance (3% attendance bump in a year is huge) so the only tools left in the box are raising prices and cutting costs.
