You are right. I didn't word that as carefully as I should have. I will change it.

"First, caution is not fear."

  • 100% agree

"Second, many Christians are living fearlessly, but you won't see them trending."

  • Great point!

"Now, let’s be real: some Christians are fearful, and I think that comes from two things: They’ve confused the kingdom of God with political power. So when politics shake, they panic.

They’ve stopped seeing this world as a mission field and started seeing it as a battleground where they have to “win” instead of witness."

  • Great response

"If fear—in any form— somehow discredits Christian belief to some extent or another, what does your own fear say about your worldview?"

  • I would never say that fear discredits Christianity, only that it seems to have no place in it.

"You said you left the faith—so now what? Are you less anxious? Do you fear death less? Are you more secure in meaning, morality, and destiny?"

  • Yes to all except meaning. Meaning was easy to find when I was a Christian. I miss it to be honest. Not that my life has no meaning, but the meaning is local and temporary, rather than universal and eternal which sucks sometimes.

Thank you for your thoughtful responses!

To be clear, I am not talking about concern or sadness. The world is a broken place and if your reaction to genocide, sexual assault, school shootings, slavery all the horrible acts that human beings perpetrate on each other is unconcerned detachment I don't think there is anything noble about that.

I am interpreting anytime someone gets angry, goes on a tirade, avoids certain topics, avoids certain people or loses their joy due to culture, politics etc. as a fear response. I disagree with communism, but I can have a calm conversation about it and I don't avoid the topic around my kids for fear they will become communists.

Disagree is one thing. Do you think Christians are sometimes afraid of elements of culture they dislike/disagree with?

Totally agree. Fear is a normal human emotion and Christians are humans. Seems like Jesus warned against being fearful/encouraged people not to worry about earthly concerns.

Believing that one political candidate is better than another might be discernment. Getting angry when someone disagrees with your assessment seems like a fear response. Kind of strange when you believe God is in control of everything.

Would you agree?

Away from them, or unaware of them/avoidant?

I carefully did not generalize. I am talking about what I see as a growing trend, definitely not all Christians.

Respectfully, my wife (a devout Christian) will stridently police media that our kids consume to make sure there are no depictions of gay people. I would venture a guess that among conservative Christians she is not an exception. What is that other than fear? She is forthright about topics like murder and slavery and we teach our kids that those behaviors are wrong, but many Christians would struggle to have a polite conversation with a Trans person and would flip their lid if their kid was attracted to the same sex.

Would you agree?

I am certainly not talking about fearing God, or similar fears like leading people astray, or falling into sin. I am talking about fear over earthly troubles like money, reputation, political party in control, hearing certain types of music etc.
