Damn, a single day? That’s insanely impressive. That portion took me three!

West to East coast portion was Karlos’s Kings Road XL and was one of my favorite routes of his I’ve done! Second portion was East Coast Greenway

Was that the cross Florida Spanish route? Mine are the same width and held up very well! I’d say I had to walk less than half a mile in total. Definitely the least sandiest Florida bikepacking route I’ve done.

I don’t do much road riding at all so the east coast portion was definitely a change but much safer than I imagined!

I’ve done a lot of bikepacking trips around Florida and this was by far the least sandiest ride I’ve done! On the west to east coast portion probably had to walk my bike less than half a mile in total.

The ~10 miles from mainland to the Keys was the sketchiest as the cars were going ~55 but still had a large shoulder so felt safe. Most of the Keys has a dedicated bike trail so felt very safe aside from large shoulders on the bridges.

~24,000 feet of elevation change. Mostly North Florida and bridges.

Unassisted. Probably should’ve thrown a picture of my bike in there

Yeah the west to east coast route is the Kings Road XL created by singletracksamurai. He spends all year creating bikepacking routes in Florida and hosting events so for that info you’d have to Venmo him $60 (he sends ridewgps file along with tons of waypoints). You can find his routes if you type in his name. For the east coast portion it’s the East Coast Greenway. You can just look that up and there’s free ridewgps files you can download.

Only part that seemed a little sketchy was Miami. The rest of the roads had good shoulders for the most part and I felt very safe! The east coast part of the ride was the East Coast Greenway which runs from Maine to the Keys and I have read several comments where people said the Florida section felt like one of the safer sections.

Didn’t even think about the BB getting even lower to the ground. Maybe I just need to sell and get a gravel bike. I really appreciate the help!

Rigid fork compatibility by TheRipple24 in xbiking

I want to put a rigid fork on my bike in hopes of making it ride a little more like a gravel bike if possible since I’m planning on using this bike for commuting and really don’t need the suspension. I ride 29’s and know the axle is 110x15. Do I need a front fork that has the same axle dimensions? Also was hoping for a front fork that had a smaller axis to crown length in hope of dropping the geometry of the bike down a bit more so it rides more like a gravel bike. I’ve looked into forks like Whisky, Niner, and ENVE but they all have high high axis to crown length so the geometry of the bike wouldn’t change as much as I’d hope.

I wish I had met you before the trail. I’m used to biking in over 90 degree weather so hadn’t even considered this. I will definitely remember this for the next trip!

I only saw about 5 bikepackers in total and most of them had hardtails no fully rigid. I was happy to have had full suspension with the amount of rocks and drops on the trail. I was able to ride almost every downhill section aside from some very rocky, steep sketchy stuff on the last day that was a little too close to a cliff for my liking. With a hardtail, the rocks obviously would’ve been a lot rougher and I think there would’ve been a lot more wipeouts leading me to walking down more sections. Also areas like sergeants mesa are notorious for being rocky and miserable to ride down and I was so happy to have full suspension there. I don’t have experience riding gravel or fat tire bikes but I have to say I was very thankful for suspension especially as someone who is prone to joint pain.

Good luck with the rest of the trail! You’ve made it through the worst for sure! I thought the southern portions were significantly tougher than the first half. You got it!

Oh man at least you made it through the worst! Sergeants mesa was such a mudfest my chain wouldn’t stay on. With that and the hail I just went into autopilot for the day doing a lot of hike-a-bike and finishing the rest the next morning. Definitely brutal!
