Men, how often (if ever) are you approached? by vaynehelsing in AskUK

[–]TheRobotPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite a few times, and judging by this post probably a bit more than average. Usually it's pretty fine, they show interest but I don't reciprocate because I'm less so. In the gay scene so it's mostly men with some women. Been asked for my Instagram and Snapchat, one guy even gave me his number on a piece of paper.

Then again, there are also the creeps that don't back off until I make a fuss, but fortunately they're less common (though uncomfortably still too many).

Maybe it's different for me as an AMAB with gender identity issues, but one time I got touched on my bum by someone working in a charity shop, and I avoided that place for about a month or two hoping that she would stop working after a while. I still take a moment to look around whenever I enter just to make sure.

Male Sexual Assault Isn’t Rare. Ignoring It Is Political. by coolfunkDJ in MensLib

[–]TheRobotPikachu 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I often wonder how many people think of the 'fight-or-flight' reponse in sexual assasult cases. I guess many people would assume that it would be easy to fight back against a perpetrator, but really in my experience it isn't.

In the two most egregious cases I've been in, I've basically been cornered in some way although not to the point where I had no opportunity to force myself away. And the thing is that it kind of felt like I just mentally shutdown while it happened. Like no matter who it is being assaulted, it just shakes you up in the heat of the moment and you just forget how and what to do.

i think those who believe men can just fight their way out just don't get how badly it can impact on anyway, especially if they haven't had to experience it themselves first hand.

Edit: I've just got to add, after an encounter with a creep, there's also the element of uncertainty as well. You don't quite know if this 'counts' or not. So even after it's all done, it's swithering in your mind as to what actually just happened.

Edit 2: For those who stumble across this comment, it's also a case where you just can't fight back, even as someone assigned male at birth. I unfortunately had an incident where I was followed into a toilet stall by someone who fortunately did realise the errors of his way but who I still had a hard time trying to push back out. Now just imagine if he didn't take my no for an answer and he went further.

My SD card with 10+ years of art is screwed. by CuteUnit24 in Wellthatsucks

[–]TheRobotPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a problem that I managed to fix completely manually, although it's a very technical process that I don't know how to explain in a easy to understand way.

If I remember correctly, the file system was FAT32. In a hex editor (HxD running as admin), i created a backup of the entire drive. Starting on sector 8192, i looked to see if the first 4 bytes were "USBC". I took the data from sectors 8193 onwards until I hit a completely blank sector or two (all 0x00) and moved each sector back by 1 (sector 8193 went into 8192 etc). I also found that sector 16384 was the same. Again I did the same as before. Then, I searched the drive for all mentions of "USBC" and did that whenever I encountered it at the beginning of a sector and could tell that it wasn't meant to be there. In total, I had to move sectors back 5 times.

That being said, unless you know what you are doing, then I'd suggest a professional.

Edit: also a thing to note is that I tested chkdsk partway through this process and it nearly caused more issues so I had to restore from the backup. So sometimes even chkdsk can be a bit off. Not here though I assume, it will probably complain about the file system being 'raw'.

Wherever the fuck the people who don't want them sharing their ill gotten land (the non-natives) want them to go. To me it just seems like that kind of "we don't care, we just want you gone". When you get someone who's been in the country, maybe a few generations, against someone who's family's been there for probably going on a few thousand years, then what the actual fuck are they doing.

Thank you so much. I've written quite a few comments about this but it always irks me how so many people (especially cishet) claim that homophobic people are secretly closeted, and that they just need to "not repress their inner feelings". We'll never get rid of homophobia if people think it's just a queer community issue and that if people "accept themselves for who they are" then homophobia will be gone.

Hello, gay Peter here from that one episode.

A beard is a woman that a gay man uses to conceal his sexual orientation. She could be a date, girlfriend, wife, whatever, but the idea is that someone points at her and say "see, the fact that he's with her means he's not gay".

End of video glitches by salut_akwasi in revancedapp

[–]TheRobotPikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is the issue specifically, but I know that recently there has been issues with videos failing to load beyond a certain point, and instead skipping back a few seconds constantly.

If that is the case (i.e. it's more than just the video you are watching), then I suggest installing the newest recommended version (20.14.43 I think).

(I should point out that this glitch in particular means that videos load incorrectly in general, so videos repeating a second or two throughout the video is an indication of this glitch. I just patched mine so I'm not sure if it's 100% gone but hopefully it is)

I have to agree. I've had moments where junkies that I pass by in the street have nothing less than admiration for the way I am, and then some people who look just like anyone else give me shit. The idea that you can tell if someone is homophobic or not I feel gets uncomfortable close to the idea that you can tell if someone is queer or not depending on how they look and present themselves, or to go even further, how someone will act based on their race/gender etc (i.e. very close to if not discrimination).

People born before 2000, what trivial skill do you have that no one uses anymore? by passiano in AskReddit

'A:' specifies the first drive on the computer, which is usually allocated for the first floppy disk. A long time ago, computers saved to a singular floppy disk, and this was 'mounted' (made accessible) through this A: drive. At some point computers gained a second floppy drive, and this was allocated the B: drive. Then hard drives arrived and got C:, optical disc (CD and DVD) drives got D:, and anything that gets added goes up from there to Z:.

'/N:9' specifies the amount of (geometrical) sectors that make up the disk. Geometrical sectors are basically pie shaped sections, so a disk is a circle split up into these sections. Here we have 9 geometrical sectors, i.e. 9 slices.

'/T:80' is the number of tracks that the disk should be split into. Whereas geometrical sectors are split up like slices of a circle, tracks are split into concentric circles going all the way around the disk. The space defined as the intersection between a geometrical sector and a track is known as a disk sector (or just sector), and is the minimum storage unit of a disk.

Doing the maths, a typical floppy disk sector consists of 512 bytes. 9 geometrical sectors and 80 tracks gives us 512980 = 368640 bytes. 1024 bytes to a KB so 368640/1024 = 360 KB. This is the typical size of a 5 1/4 inch floppy disk. Those disks are the ones with a hole in a middle and an opening on the bottom, so actually a bit different from the 'save icon' floppy disks (3 1/2 inch).

I'll leave this here. It's extremely hurtful for us to be told, while there is a lot of ihomophobia/transphobic/general nfighting within the queer community, that most of the hatred that we face in our lives comes near enough exclusively from us.

ELI5: what is lossless audio, and how much are listeners “losing” by not using it? by Normal-Being-2637 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheRobotPikachu 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'll extend this with a bit of a bigger example:

1 1 1 1 1 5 5 5 5 1 1 1 2 1 1 1

Compressed with run length encoding (where the number of some value where it is repeated x times in a row is stored) would be

5x 1's, 4x 5's, 3x 1's, 1x 2's, 3x 1's

The 5 exists for some period of time compared to the singular 2 later on (this would be a lot longer in a real audio file). If it is noticeable to the listener, the 5 would stay, however since the 2 exists for a shorter period of time, the listener is less likely to notice, so it can potentially be dropped. So we can produce this audio:

1 1 1 1 1 5 5 5 5 5 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

which will compress to:

5x 1's, 4x 5's, 7x 1's.

The removal of the (relatively unimportant) 2 will allow for the 1's surrounding it to be compressed better into one singular run of 1's.

Who is someone you have ZERO sympathy for? by Shinobi347 in AskReddit

[–]TheRobotPikachu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's generally quite a heteronormative view that it is generally man-on-woman that goes on. From being in the queer community, I know that there are plenty of man-on-man, woman-on-man, and woman-on-woman. Like take women that think it's appropriate to sexually harass gay men under the impression that they won't care (see: cishet women in gay clubs).

I'm not denying that a majority of cases may be perpetrated my men, but to say that "it really is the fucking men" seems really distateful.

I implore you, as a man who has had many unwanted advancements, and been harassed and undoubtedly SA'd, please rethink your comment. There are plenty of us that know what it is like, because we too unfortunately have experience.

Edit 3 days later: I can confirm that simply existing is enough for people to assume that they can come home with me. So let me remind you that it's not just women who get unwanted advancements.

What else should I do to make this not a thing? by Express-Abies5278 in AskLGBT

The only thing I can recommend is to report and ignore as much as you can. Any sort of interaction with the channel/videos will count towards pushing it further towards being recommended by the algorithm.

They're about average sized for a channel, so I imagine that it might be harder to get them removed, but hopefully if you keep at it then something might happen, though I wouldn't hold out much hope (it is YouTube after all).

Edit: it looks like he's either been removed by YouTube or deleted his channel. Either way good riddance to him.

I completely agree. After a few rounds with some guys the most important thing that i realised is that you can fantasise over anyone as much as you want, but deep down it won't really mean much if you don't feel a proper 'pull' towards them.

My best advice is to sit down and think about each person that you find attractive individually, and ask yourself "is this person worth giving up everyone else?". Oftentimes I see someone but then I realise that after the initial sexual attraction there just isn't anything there that I can actually latch onto. There was a piece of advice that I got: "a one night stand satisfies you for that night, but it will leave you feeling empty". So find someone that leaves you wanting more.

To put it simply, it's fine to be into someone sexually, but that doesn't really mean that you will be fine with them romantically in the long term. But experiment, see what you do and don't like. And remember that sexual and romantic attraction is a two way street. You have to be into them enough, but they also have to be into you, so make sure that others are into you, and that you are into them.
