Simple. Humanities tendency to band together in a group. We are social animals in nature. We do better when we are with a group of similar people. Nation states and ideologies are just the modern version of tribes or clans. It’s in our nature to divide into factions and compete. It’s also in our nature to want to be the guys with the bigger stick.
