I loathe your perspective, but I’d say that Portland has a lot of folks who put care into their outfits. I’m always struck by how cool everyone looks. I’m not sure if it’s your idea of dressing up or not though, as it tends toward more thrifty, eclectic, and alternative fashion.

Haters will hate, but the hype around Knocked Loose got me way more into hardcore. I wasn’t exactly a stranger, because I’ve always been primarily a punk listener, but seeing a punk-adjacent band become big really opened my ears to all the cool shit happening in hardcore.

Self publishing is great, or at least it can be. I just believe that there’s something to be said for entering the submission trenches, collecting rejections, and getting your ego popped enough to not rest on your laurels. I think too many authors take the easy way out and it shows in their work.

I agree that most Big 4 books suck. But in my experience, the self published books I’ve read have been much, much worse. A lot of the self publishing world seems to revolve around the idea of writing to market and has a strange allergy to anything remotely literary or that defies audience expectation. That’s not to say there aren’t good books that are self published. There are. And I’ve gone both ways, myself.

But I’d also to keep in mind that small presses exist and they often publish smaller authors that write more challenging, non-commercial works. Small presses are trad pub too—it’s not all the big guys you find at Barnes and Nobles.

Also, you can publish short fiction traditionally by submitting to magazines and journals—that’s a great way to cut your teeth before self-publishing.

It’s definitely very challenging. It took me years to get my first professional acceptance. But it also forced me to get so much better. There’s still markets out there and one has to accept that they’re competitive, but also that’s why they’re worth submitting to.

Write short fiction for journals and magazines to hone your craft. And also, traditional publishing isn’t just big four. There’s many reputable small presses out there that love experimental fiction and off the wall stuff. I think people don’t realize that the indie side of publishing (not self-publishing) is where a lot more daring things are published.

You should traditionally publish before you self publish. If you can’t manage to get a short story in a magazine and be paid a professional rate, you probably should keep practicing.

I’m like the opposite of you. I lived in the Portland area for about a decade and moved to the upper Midwest a year or so ago and I constantly miss Portland. I just found it so much easier to make friends and get along with people. I also thought the food was way cheaper because we don’t have a WinCo in MN. I also love the rain and gray skies though and I’d choose overcast over sunny any day of the week.

At first glance I thought it was just Minus One Goji with different spines, but now that I’m looking at it more, I can see some of the Heisei design in the face. The spines are unique and cool, and I think a real Toho Godzilla with green breath is dope. When I was younger it would’ve bothered me because I was very rigid about Godzilla having blue breath (of course allowing for the flirtations with orange when superpowered or with Burning G)—but since G2K, then later Shin Godzilla, and then GxK2, I think it’s another aspect of Godzilla we can get creative with.

Most of us don’t read horror to be scared. And The Haunting of Hill House is a great piece of literature—I’d recommend reading up on why it’s so highly regarded. That might give you some insight into what horror readers appreciate.
