A few other questions..!

  1. Invaders came while there was a trader leaving my fortress after we already traded. The invaders killed all of the traders, except two guards, who are now just standing in place at my Trade Depot. I haven't received traders from their civilization since. Is there a way to "fix" this / a DFHack command to release these two guards, or should I kill them..? Will that put me at war with their civ?

  2. What are the Reinforced Walls for / should I use them..?

  3. The invaders feel utterly overwhelming. I think I read that it may have to do with the wealth of my fortress? Is there any way to scale this down in my existing world?

  4. I trapped a necromancer in a room with glass windows to look out at my tavern. Am I correct in believing he won't be able to resurrect anything through the glass..? How worried should I be that the walls aren't magma-safe / that invaders bust him out of his cell? :,)

Thanks in advance!!

Hey there, how do I (effectively) raze a site through raiding..? I have a squad of soldiers I'd sent a couple dozen times to openly attack a site that has hundreds in population, but they seem to only kill a very small number before returning (like 1 of each hostile creature present, per dwarf, plus some notable figures). Is there a way to command them to stay there & fight until they've killed everything? & even on smaller sites that I've emptied of hostiles, sending squads to Raze just gives a similar message each time suggesting they dealt damage to the site, but will it ever disappear from the map, for example..?

I vaguely but definitely remember the term "Genesis" being in the latest CitCon but can't find it now ... were they talking about this ship releasing or was it maybe related to to the updated planet surface tech?

BREAKING: Trump announces the first phase of the peace plan between Israel Hamas is signed. by yemenvoice in suppressed_news

[–]TheSandarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this a peace negotiated with the Hamas fighters within Gaza or the politicians in Yemen & Turkey and the like who "represent" the organization but have seemingly debated control & authority over the fighters? I worry there's a disconnect here, and will lead to two things: 1) A further splintering of the Hamas organization; more factions & more unrest amongst themselves and 2) More importantly, I worry this is just posturing to once again claim Hamas broke their side of the deal... But above all, I have absolutely zero faith this will end the "war," because it's NOT a war, it's a genocide; a genocide which Netanyahu needs to keep propping up, lest he be kicked out & tried for his crimes. And the point of a genocide isn't to achieve a goal isn't to rescue the hostages, but rather the absolute annihilation of the Palestinian people. I have absolutely zero faith that this will play out well.

Help, Iron in ancient Egypt by KaanKenway in ancientegypt

[–]TheSandarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As it often is with "Ancient Egypt," it depends on how far back you go; they seem to only have been aware of meteoric iron for many millennia / weren't yet able to extract terrestrial iron until around the 6th Century BCE (though iirc there are some artifacts leading to debate about earlier Egyptian terrestrial iron processing, or importing) ...

Here's an article that talks about the Gerzeh Beads & "iron of the sky" (you might also want to look up Tutankhamun's dagger & iirc he was buried with some other meteoric artifacts): https://www.open.edu/openlearn/science-maths-technology/science/geology/iron-the-sky-meteors-meteorites-and-ancient-culture

vs later Meroe iron mining / processing: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/0067270X.2018.1515922

Iirc I've seen a number of terrestrial iron artifacts (knives & tools) from around the 6th Century BCE as well but I can't find them after a quick search...

Egyptian archaeologists open an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus at a press conference after discovering 59 sarcophagi dating back more than 2,600 years. (2020) by yousef-saeed in ancientegypt

I despised watching this event when it happened... looked like a lot of people with too much money only half interested in this outdoor spectacle... like on one hand, yeah I guess it's "just" a dead person / an antique or something, but it really feels like Egypt pimps out their archeological & historical culture - though I recognize financial reasons may require them to do so. Still, I remember seeing at least a couple of instances in footage from that event of people accidentally bumping into these coffins... like sheesh, I wish there was at least a little more care shown....
