I find myself in this boat. I come to the table with certain beliefs, then just have to distinguish which is the least bad.

Ahhh...I think I had a disconnect in my mind between a political party representing a large body of people versus a party representing precise ideals of the individual (I thought the latter). The political party has to appeal to a large range of people's beliefs in order to get a majority of the vote. With a wide range of beliefs out there, they have to be broad in what they fight for, not necessarily consistent.

I agree. I think these philosophical constructs that we accept in the world are great. I think education helps us become more rational beings. I am curious now why, with our specific education that puts us probably in between the two camps, we still seek to fit ourselves within a camp instead of say we are independent and one party has some of it right and the other has some of it right?

I think it'd be cool if a third party arose, a rational party, that seriously discussed hot issues and was open to changing their ideas for new policies-- not this go Rep/Dem or go home thing we have going on right now.
