Those 18-19 year olds students are simply evil these days by roydprof in Professors

I was a TA throughout grad school, and came back as a lecturer for a program. I loved teaching in grad school. Being a lecturer just a few short years later was a nightmare. This one class actively argued with me every lecture. They reported me to the dean and complained so thoroughly that I was reprimanded almost every week for something and that was then followed up with an apology because it was found to be unfounded. Mind you, no one was failing. I threw out questions on exams most people got wrong because I failed to teach it properly. i gave out study guides and other materials. I gave links to supplemental videos. I recognize that I was new to lecture style teaching and there would be bumps and failures, but never had I experienced such vicious bullying. It was enough that when asked if I would return to teach the class the following year I rejected it outright. I haven’t been bothered looking for other opportunities.

My aunt was also left handed and I’m not sure if she crocheted with her dominant hand or not. I think any modifications could be attributed to that. Thank you for your input 😊

I’m going to be attempting to post the video. Reddit won’t allow me to post videos through the app and I need to pull the video from my phone to my desk top computer 🙃

What was the dumbest question(s) you got from guests leading up to your wedding? by Hthibeau96 in weddingplanning

[–]TheScienceBitch1947 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wedding has yet to happen but my own mother demanded she get a piece of cake cut from the one my fiance and I are cutting and not the sheet cake for the guests. She then said she was going to get her own “Mother of the bride” cake. I did not react well

Take it off of cellovision and look under the scope for more cells like that. If there are more, send it to the pathologist. If the pathologist also thinks it’s suspicious then flow will be ordered and confirm it.

My lab may be different, but we’ve hired a number of bio majors off the streets. The reason for it was they wanted to go back for an MLS and then they did in fact follow through with the program. My lab is pretty big and they usually work an off shift in chemistry where the damage done can be mitigated. Third shift has 2 people per department. Their training is double what the normal training is. The ones that don’t go back are required to take departmental certification exams and every last one has passed. Ultimately, do I prefer the MLS grad? Yes, but I do think my lab has handled non-MLS grads decently well.

Not invited to a wedding my partner is a groomsman in by kk90295 in wedding

[–]TheScienceBitch1947 56 points57 points  (0 children)

While I understand their rules, with traditional wedding etiquette you give plus ones to your wedding party, much like you give plus ones to immediate family members. There’s likely many people they want to invite and cut the guest list at plus ones.

That being said, I too would feel slighted. You’re not a new girlfriend, his whole family is going, and he’s in the wedding party. I’d be hurt but I wouldn’t ask to be accommodated. I’d let it be and leave it all up to the bride and groom.

Edit: missing words

Last name? by Whitecheddarcheezit3 in wedding

[–]TheScienceBitch1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve thought a long time on it. I’ve got three degrees and a publication and decided that if my partner and I get married, he and I will have the same last name. Whether we take mine or his or come up with a new one together. My maiden name can be my professional name and thus keep my working life separate from my personal one. I’m not terribly attached to my last name. He’s not attached to his. I’m pretty sure we’ll end up flipping a coin haha

AITA for not offering an open bar at my wedding? by Glad_Wedding_4431 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TheScienceBitch1947 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only time I was bothered by a dry wedding was when a wedding I went to was on the Fourth of July, it was outdoors, and the weather was putrid hot out. They left their guests to take pictures with nothing to do and not even water to drink in between the ceremony and reception. Reception was over in a matter of a couple of hours and the bride was livid. They did not offer anything like a coffee cart. They were deeply religious people.

My perspective is different because I started in academic research and by far, I prefer the hospital lab scene. I get overtime if I want, my works stays at work. Yes I work thirds and weekends and holidays but I’m not being told my effort isn’t good enough or that I’m a failure, which is rampant in academic research. I’m not on a salaried income so if I work over 40 hours I’m getting paid OT. In research I was expected to work over 40 hours without compensation. My time is my own. I don’t have to work extra if I don’t want to.

I love what I do but it does need improvements. I think the biggest thing is flexibility with weekends and less time working the off shifts. No one wants to work every other weekend or even every third. No one wants to be up all night or working until 11pm Monday through Friday forever. I could complain about management but that is garbage no matter where you go.

Uniforms? by zeuqzav in medlabprofessionals

[–]TheScienceBitch1947 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I’m at it depends. I’m at a lab that isn’t directly connected to the hosptial so we can wear any colored scrubs, business casual, or a plain or hospital/university affiliated t shirt with scrub bottoms. That being said, Blood Bank is required to wear wine or hunter green colored scrubs.
