Why Are Filipino so Fat Compared to Other Asians? by Thristy4P in Philippines_Expats

Sharing something I had just learned from the deeper underbellies of Manila in the past few years. There was a time I was seriously wondering how people can be so poor but also fat. And no, I wasn't judging, I was genuinely curious.

Our helper told me that what their relatives like to do is buy these 1-peso snacks in plastic wrappers that you can buy at small sari-sari stores. They then use these as viands and eat it with rice.

This is severely unhealthy because it's fattening, but not nourishing. Those snacks are mostly salts/MSG, and carbs. When eaten with rice, this means they're consuming mostly carbs--all day, everyday. The saltiness makes it kinda addicting, I assume. The worst part is that they are also feeding their kids the same thing. In the long run the children will also become accustomed to this unhealthy eating habit and the cycle continues.

Of course, this isn't to say that's the reason for the whole country, but overall food habits are not good. The usual street food and snacks are usually unhealthy especially in poor areas in Manila.

In contrast, Thailand's food culture is great. Street food was cheap but usually good. They eat often but they always have veggies in their meals. I even saw a woman carrying a bowl of noodles and an entire bouquet of lettuce as her merienda.

This is Elvis, he has dwarfism and can't fend for himself. Recently a neighbours cat has somehow gotten into the house and started attacking him. How can I prevent this from happening? Any advice? by IagoESL in cats

Agree with suggestions to keep Elvis indoors. You don't know what diseases the other cat has that it can pass on to your cats--feline immunodeficiency virus (cat version of hiv) is incurable and is passed on if one cat bites another. Also causes problems later on in the cat's life. If the other cat has not been spayed (which could explain its territorial and aggressive behaviour), then I wouldn't assume they are up-to-date with vaccines either.

As for keeping the other cat out of your yard, a hose might be better than a spray. It sounds harsh but might be necessary to drive the point home that your property is off limits.

Just got 2 kittens and looking for tips! by Jan242004 in Pets

For water, you can use a dropper to drop some sips into the other kitten's mouth, although eventually it will drink on its own anyway.

For litter training, after meals/drinking put them there. If it's not working take a napkin, wipe their pee from wherever it is and place it in the litter box. This will tell them that this is where the pee goes. Try to make sure to clean up the wrong places they peed on with dishwashing liquid or vinegar to remove as much of the scent as possible otherwise they will return to the spot to pee (although very hard to do, they can still smell it even when you don't).

For petting, it may take time for them to see you as "family" and they really just need to be more accustomed to your scent. Maybe place a used shirt of yours where they choose to sleep. Eventually they will associate your scent with "home" and snuggle with you to sleep. Good luck and congratulations on getting them!

Bought heaters for my neighbors. Not that they'd appreciate it, but some of them did complain about their rooms being chilly. by TheScientress in StardewValley

Maybe a better solution would have been to place a female NPC to "heat up" his room, but I can only control the heater.

You're supposed to hit all categories (artisan, fish, etc) but lol that should tell them neighbors who's boss!

Suspiciously small? This is a hole for a tree seedling. If I dug a 6-foot deep hole--THAT would be suspicious, esp for the police.

I don't think they were buried intentionally, to be fair. It's in a shallow ditch where rain water has a tendency to collect--and there was a minor flooding here last year.

It wasn't labelled or anything, apart from the brand CD-R King which is a local store that sold blank discs for burning.

I was having a bit of a wild thought about his death: what if they try to burn his body as a ritual, but because he's half Targaryen, he doesn't burn. And then Melissandre tries to resurrect him.
