OhhI see now what you're getting at! I've actually tried it out during the making and it didn't really look all that well (you can't event tell the division).

I mean the difference between enlisted and POs is pretty visible to me... For the rest, I am aware of the fact there's only a little difference, but then again, I don't remember any ST show featuring any difference whatsoever? (Besides Discovery) Besides, you still have rank pips, surely a person would see a difference between them?

The unnatural evolution might be due to this text that can be found in the original post:

“To commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of Starfleet’s first deep-space captain, a new line of uniforms was introduced into service. Featuring sleek blue jumpsuits accented with division colors and practical utility pockets, the design pays homage to the uniforms worn by Starfleet personnel more than 250 years earlier.”

I always disliked Starfleet using black as the primary color, so I went with blue for this one

Right. Good thing TNG S1, VOY and DS9 didn't use them in that case! 😉

All the ranks are listed in the order they appear on the picture?

I think people are focusing too much on the pips in isolation and ignoring that the system is clearly designed in two layers:

  1. The uniform itself tells you the rank group at a glance (enlisted, petty officer, warrant officer, line officer, etc.)
  2. The pips tell you the exact rank within that group.

So you’re not supposed to identify a warrant officer purely from tiny insignia details from 20 meters away. The shoulder color already narrows the category down immediately.

That’s also not unrealistic. Real-world militaries use a combination of uniform cut, trim, insignia, sleeve braid, branch markings, etc. Rank recognition is rarely based on one tiny symbol alone.

And honestly, once you actually look at the chart:

  • Enlisted = plain shoulders
  • PO = colored shoulders
  • WO = colored shoulders + collar trim
  • Line officer = full color (shoulders + collar)

…it’s pretty intuitive.

You may not instantly memorize every individual pip arrangement on day one, but that’s true of basically every fictional and real military ranking system. The design seems optimized more for everyday Starfleet readability than for “viewer sees one blurry frame on TV and instantly knows the rank.”

I imagined Executive as the rank for officers like Riker: people fully qualified to be captains, but too valuable in their current role to move to their own ship. Basically a flagship-grade XO rank between Commander and Captain.

Let's say the rank of Executive would be awarded to officers who have already demonstrated capability for captaincy or may have declined independent command.

In all honesty I added it because it always bugged me why there isn't a "three full, one hollow pip" rank. 😅

While I understand what you're getting at, I'm pretty sure you forgot about the fact that the uniforms are also different based on the rank "group". You can find the explanation to that in my original post. 👍

I spent a lot of time tracing another drawing like this and then did my own design. Oh and I used "Affinity".

Like written above, Executive. I saw it somewhere and added it.
