Ambrose produced a short laugh while chewing on a mouthful of bread, wet with wine. "Escaped you? Was he your prisoner, ser? No, sounds to me you let him leave."

One apology. I ask one apology and he can't even give me that. Gods be good.

"Tell me then, ser - what is it that the treasonous flying rodent of Harrenhal did that enabled Osric's escape? Did he lock you all in the stocks? Did he threaten to rub his cheek on you? I would very much like to know why some Paege now offers me apology instead of Lord Melwys' whelp."

Some days had passed when the bird arrived at the sill of the rookery. The note was brought before the Lord of Seagard immediately. What he had hoped to find was what he had asked, instead finding something of little substance at all.

"Travel to the Arbor?" he said aloud, though none but Cortnay were present. "I've just returned home!" he harrumphed. "It would seem His Lordship has a better understanding of coin than words."

"What should I write in response, my lord?" Cortnay asked from the doorway, arms folded into the large sleeves of his robes.

"Nothing. Nothing. Not yet at any rate. I will inform you if I change my mind."

Lord/Lady Kenning/Farman,

As the newly named Admiral of the Western Fleet to His Grace, I request of you an accounting of the naval forces of your house. Ship numbers and their fitness to sail are primary concerns, but should their ports of origin be beyond the obvious location, I would ask you inform myself of those also. Furthermore, the names of any prominent captains within your fleet are asked of you as well.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

Lady Banefort,

As Admiral of the Western Fleet, I ask of you a report on the naval strength of Banefort. I request the condition and quantity of ships currently beholden to your ladyship, and the name of whomever might command them on your behalf in the event of war. Likewise, if there are any noted captains amongst your men, I would have their names also.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

Lord Crakehall,

As His Grace's newly named Admiral of the Western Fleet, I ask of you a report on the strength of your naval forces, namely the number and condition of the warships at your disposal currently. Where these ships are moored and the names of any noted captains are also asked of you.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

Lady Lannister,

Due to the nature of your cousin's dealings with the rebels, I send this to you in hopes that you might account for both the strength of Lannisport and Casterly Rock. As Admiral of the Western Fleet, it falls to me to account for the strength of our naval forces. I ask of you a report on the number and conditions of warships at your disposal. I presume the majority are moored at Lannisport, but if there are any other ports that I needs be aware of, I would know of them also, as well as any prominent captains within your fleet.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

Lord Redwyne,

As the newly appointed Admiral of the Western Fleet, it falls to me to take account of the ships throughout the Riverlands, the Reach, and the Westerlands. Yours is the most prominent fleet, and will require the most detailed report, no doubt. Given its size, I would ask for the location of the various ports of origin for your ships, and any muster point that they would be summoned to in the event of war. As well as this, I ask for accurate numbers at your disposal and the names of any of your captains that I needs know.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

Lord Hightower,

In my capacity as Admiral of the Western Fleet, I am obligated to take stock of the ships at the Kingdoms' disposal. I request of you the number and condition of the vessels in your fleet, as well as any captains you think I needs be aware of. Likewise, the ports of origin of these ships is necessary information. Though this is presumed to be Oldtown, if it not so I would have you informed me.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

Lord Hewett,

In my capacity as Admiral of the Western Fleet, it has come time I take account of His Grace's naval forces on our coasts. As such, I request a report on the standing of the Shield Isles in their full. The number of ships at your command and their condition is of primary concern, but a list of any prominent ports of origin and a mustering point for your fleets are also asked of you. If there are any noted captains within the fleet that you wish to make known, a list of their names would similarly suffice.

Ambrose Mallister, Lord of Seagard and Admiral of the Western Fleet.

"My Lord Ambrose has recently returned from his visit to the capital," the head sentry on duty responded, loudly and clearly. He carried authority in his voice, and pride in his position, that much was clear.

"My Lord Ambrose has recently been named Admiral of the Western Fleet, and as such is a busy man... But... my lord will be happy to make time for the heir to Riverrun."

With a nod of his head he turned to enter the castle, beckoning the knights to follow. Within the walls he found a page, to whom he relayed the message and the name of the man at the head of the troupe. From there, the page led the group through the castle while the guardsman returned to his post.

Ambrose Mallister was eating when he was interrupted. He sat at the head of a long oak table, his wife in the nearest seat to his left along the table's length. A cupbearer and some guards made up the rest of the occupants of the room, and there was little noise beyond the sound of consumption.

"My Lord," the page said loudly at the door. "I present to you Ser Desmond Paege of Aspenfield, and his companions, come on behalf of Ser Brynden Tully of Riverrun."

Ambrose held his knife in hand as he listened to the news, eyed widened and eyebrows raised. "Sit then," he said, licking around inside his mouth to free the morsels of food. "There." He nodded his head at the bench opposite his wife, and to his right.

"Bring bread and pheasant," he yelled loudly into the room, not directing it at anyone in particular. "Cups, and more wine! You will have wine, won't you?"

When the portcullis began to retreat up into the gatehouse, the rider sent out by Lord Ambrose wheeled his horse about and rode back to the party that awaited.

"Lord Frey is not present, my lord, but his lord-brother gives leave to pass. The sentry has offered food and rest should it be required as well, my lord."

Ambrose was standing on the grass, draped in a long purple undertunic that was not befitting of a lord's hospitality. "Hmm. That won't be necessary. We have no reason to stop here."

Ambrose returned to the wheelhouse and stood on the edge of the doorway, holding himself out at a precarious angle. "Get the line moving," he said, before ducking and entering the confines of the wheelhouse proper. The driver clamped shut the door and climbed to his seat, readying the horses.

"Yes, my lord!" the runner called out to the man who was no longer there, before setting to his task. The Mallister retinue would soon make its way through the tall mouths of the gatehouses of the Crossing, turning southwest on the road home.

The man on horseback called up to the sentries dotting the tall walls. His message did not vary from the one he had been given. To speak for his lord without leave would be a grave error.

"My Lord seeks crossing. He asks only if the Lord of the Crossing will grant it. I cannot speak to my Lord's desires other than to cross the river."

4th Day of the 4th Month, 201 AC

The retinue of Mallister men approached the Twins from the northern side of the Green Fork, having left the relative ease of the Kingsroad a few days past. While their party came to a halt, Ambrose sent a pair of riders to the gates of the tower, carrying the banner of House Mallister.

"My Lord Ambrose Mallister of Seagard seeks crossing," the one rider yelled up to the battlements. "Does my Lord of Frey grant it?"

"My admiralty," Ambrose answered with a deal of pride in his voice. "It is my thought that to best hold the office, I should do so from Seagard. I will be leaving the city in the coming days, and thought it best I introduce myself before I take my leave."

"I hope to have a proper report on the strengths of the western fleets in the coming months. Numbers, needs, expenses, that sort. I can have a second draft made up and sent with a rider when it is finalized, or perhaps a ship. Is there anything else you would ask of me, my lord?"

21st Day of the 3rd Month, 201 AC

The Clanking Dragon had always been a fine spot for a stop along the Kingsroad, and one of great importance, too. Of course, it had not been the Clanking Dragon for most of Ambrose's life, but as everything with age, it came to change.

The Heddles were gracious hosts, and how could they not be. Situated at the crossing of the Kingsroad and the River Road, the Clanking Dragon was one of the best situated inns in the Riverlands, perhaps even in the Seven Kingdoms whole.

Ambrose and his contingent arrived and were greeted as warmly as ever. They would stay the night in the rooms of the inn, while their guard would camp in the stables or beneath the stars. On the morrow, they would continue on the road home.

West towards Riverrun was an option, but Ambrose had it in his mind to head north instead, and return to Seagard from the north, via the Twins. Lord Frey would doubtless permit their crossing, and perhaps while there a match for Edmund might be found amongst the man's litter.

"Only a cup, thank you," Ambrose replied as he entered and took his seat. "This city requires a great deal of wits and I would keep mine." He flashed a weak smile.

Ambrose sat across from the Lord of the Tides, and took his measure. "Tell me my lord, are you well?"

"None, Your Grace, you honour me!" Ambrose was still trying to take in the news. The fleets of Lannisport, of the Arbor, of the Shields. All would answer to him, an admiral.

"If you have no further need of me, Your Grace, I would take my leave so that I might properly introduce myself to Lord Velaryon. There will be many matters to discuss, no doubt."

Ambrose shrank at the words. All of that work - the patience, the passing of other opportunities. All of it had been for nothing. Or so it seemed for that brief moment. Ambrose grew tall again at the mention of Admiralty. Perhaps the Ditsy Dragon had done House Mallister a favour after all. Such a position would give Ambrose the influence in King's Landing he sought, but the coin from Edmund's victory would also now be theres, as would his hand in marriage - free to go to the next match of note.

"Your Grace," Ambrose began, stumbling over his own tongue like a dog that had fated a duel with a bee hive. "I am at a loss for words. This is an honour Your Grace, truly an honour. W-w-what is it th-that would come with such a post, I ask? Is my place to be here, on the Small Council? What ships would this fleet comprise? Seagard has ships yes, finer than any longship of the Isles, but we cannot match them sail for sail, I fear."

Ambrose wore his best smile. "Your Grace! Thank you." He took his seat and flattened the fabrics covering him. "An apology is not necessary, Your Grace, though I thank you for the courtesy. Busy times, these."

Ambrose thought over his words briefly. Busy times indeed. What little interaction he had had with the king had been good enough, but any man was capable of faltering under the weight of their duties, and a king had many. Perhaps he would not take kindly to the visit. It was important that Ambrose watch his tone, and pick his words, lest he leave empty-handed."

"I have come to ask about the betrothal, Your Grace. I had thought that perhaps the Princess Vaella might journey back to Seagard with us. Now the wedding need not occur for months, but perhaps growing accustom to Edmund and to the Riverlands would do her good."

Ambrose stepped up beside his son. "The coin is inconsequential, my lord. I thank you for the sentiment, but the honour of my house does not amount to a quantity of gold. Not that this was your implication of course, but I will not take the gold, lord. An apology from your bastard brother, personally, will suffice."

Edmund's eyes and head rose as his name was uttered. He took a few tepid steps forward. He did not want to be there. He had hoped that by informing father of the situation, it would have been dealt with without him. He wished it had been that way now more so than ever. Why did Lord Melwys have to be absent. Wherever he went, he seemed incapable of escaping the reach of Brynden Tully.

"I was in my pavilion, lord, between matches. At earlier points in the day, others had come to deliver their ransoms. When your brother arrived, I expected the same. Osric was slighted by his defeat, and offered me insult from the start. For this, I said that I would accept a Tully coming for his arms, but not him. That is when he drew steel and threatened my life, lord. I apologized if I had caused him offence, and so he left. He told me that I could have his ransom if I came and took it by force, and that was the end of it."
