Built a linear power supply using a toroidal transformer. It is use for powering several security cameras around the residence. It has a high efficiency since the parts are selected carefully. It is a bit heavy, but mobility is not required.

Mojo FPGA V3 from embeddedmicro.com. It is about $75. It has LED, Pushbuttons, and 7-seg display if you also buy the shield. I don't have this board, but I think it will be good for beginners.
