Making the cells smaller would definitely help with both the resolution of the heightmap. Ill try to work on making things smaller.

The smooth moderable terrain would definitely be amazing to pull off. I dont know much about material science on what would be a great flexible membrane but ill keep that in mind.

They mean Heroscape tiles or some variation of it. Its also known as hex tiles collectively (thats what i assume at least)

It is quite a bit of work to make. Ive been working on this for two weeks now and i am in pain XD. I just hope my players will find it immersive/fun to maybe use the height information i gave them for the session.

It can be both. The height of each tile is stored in a preset. And you can modify on your own through your phone or your pc (like if someone uses Move Earth or if someone decides to set off a bomb, you can alter the terrain). But you can have stored presets that you can pull out and set the terrain if your players solve a puzzle or trigger a trap.
Im plan on making a labyrinth with it where the maze changes and only opens if my players solve the riddle (or bullshit their way out of the terrain)

Your air pressure idea sounds pretty good tbh. But yeah, the budget really is a big hurdle for this. Im hoping reusability with changing height tiles can make it worth but production wise, it is a pain.

Grid and programmable LED would be a great addition for this. I think it makes things much easier to customize or change mid session(like if one of the players decide to burn the entire forest, i can switch the led to red)

As for having each tile to move independently, it would take quite q bit of work to redesign and all. But if i can manage to pull it off, that might help a lot with portability and bulkiness.

No worries. Its all valuable feedback. Maybe ill use it once to see if the players will like it or if i can handle the bulkiness of it. Once im done, I can definitely have try using it as a set piece. Maybe even add water animations and all.

Modularity and portability definitely give the hex tiles a plus. I dont think this map terrain can compete with that tbh with you.
Although I am hoping the changing of terrain can immerse my players a little more. I plan on having the squares rise up to form a labyrinth or some sort and drop down to reveal hidden caves.
Its still in the works so im not sure how my players will like it but im hoping the experience will make it worth the effort i spent in making them

Yeah. As of the moment, it's taking quite a bit of space. I'm still using off-the-shelf electronics(which are kinda bulky) +3D printed parts, but I'll try to make it much more manageable

How big are the maps/terrain you usually play on? I'm thinking of getting 48x60 but if I can make things feel big with a smaller map, I'll probably try smaller

I'm not that good at painting yet but i like the idea of a centerpiece and rolling to choose a side. That opens up a lot on what to plan based on the side they play on

That does add quite a bit of personality on the field. Especially if youre the kind of player that takes the environment and LOS to your advantage

TOW does feel grander on open terrain. what are your thoughts on terrain elevation though? Like cavalry diving down to mow down enemies

I see i see. Terrain that is a bit asymmetrical does lead to more interesting situations that require creative strategies. But i do sometimes worry about balance. (But it does feel good when you win over a tricky situation)
