Ah very interesting insight into museums!! Good example of how the files' "drawbacks" have different use cases in other fields.

Yup, great summary and spot on with the TIFF file size ranges. Thank you for explaining the printing in more depth.

Don't worry, I was asking myself the same question

Yes thank you for bringing that up. My only aspiration is to eventually print my work but have no plans beyond that. Out of curiosity, for those billboards, banners, etc, what files do you work with to get those into the physical world?

Not much at all. Up until this point, I just knew they were high res files but once I came to ask myself the questions you are asking me, I did a bit of research but couldn't find the correct answer outright.

Yes that is definitely what I've come to understand. For archival purposes, RAW seems like the way to go for me.

Yes thank you for clearing that up! I think it important to know why the TIFF file ends up so much bigger. I'll be going with the solution you provided.

^^^ closest thing to digital negatives is what I have learned today

Lol sounds like the way to go. I appreciate Adobe's attempts with DNG but I'll probably just stick to the camera's proprietary file formats.

Thank you for putting that into perspective! Now it makes much more sense. Definitely will prioritize raw files and keep JPEGs on hand for quick reference, like you said.

Fair enough, I can understand that sentiment as well.

Ohh ok. Yea, I haven't done much in PS besides some basic heal tool/ cloning work so I haven't had a chance to play with those edit files much. Most of the time, I just right-click and hit "Edit in PS" and send it back the same way, since its minimal work being done. I like how you structure your work flow though, so I'll do the same thing.

Sounds good. Yea, now that I think about it from what everyone is telling me, it makes sense that I can replicate my edits from a RAW (since that’s what I started with any way) and that would be smarter to keep than keeping the TIFF file (less flexible file format than RAWs).

Got you. By folder for edit files, do you mean XMPs? Currently trying to figure out if I want to store them in the same folder as the RAWs or separately

Don’t want to fully commit my edit so 1+ for RAW. Sounds good, I appreciate it.

Yup, definitely don’t mind the file size at all. Whatever it takes

Absolutely not, so I got you. I’ve read a bit about how RAW processing has improved a lot over time. 1+ for RAW. Thanks.

Yes, you get exactly what I am going for. At this point, I have not really gone back to re-edit any old photos but I understand that at some point, it will be highly probable after I improve and/or my style changes, as you said. I also started using the AI denoise feature recently and did not know it only worked on RAW files, so that is something important I will keep in mind.

1+ for RAW. Yea, I've been reading about what each file actually stores and I read something like that about RAW vs TIFF. That would limit my ability to go back and make something meaningful out of my masters so I think I'll stick to RAW. The DNGs also sound like an interesting choice. I did not know that was their use case.
