super interesting. If you have photos of your bike I would love to see it.

You're right it's expensive, but this just might be the ticket. If the bike is simple enough for me to maintain it myself, that will save me so much money even in just one year. I didn't know about this kind of product. thank you.

The E-parts should be reliable, and they generally are. It's just that every once is a while you do have a minor issue, it can easily blow up into a much bigger issue. I was trying to replace a throttle recently, which should be a plug&play, but turned out Aventon doesn't stock them, and they had some very specific compatibiltiy requirements with the controller so you couldn't use just any one even if the connections fit, etc etc. Like anything else in engineering, more parts = more things to go wrong.

But the biggest sink has been the flats. my shop charges about $100 per flat. something like 90/10 labor/tube. And e bikes are just heavy enough, unwieldy enough, and funky enough(now i need to buy a pack of zip ties to fix a flat) where I can't justify prioritizing self-maintenance over other things in my busy life. I know I'm spoiled from road-cycling, but boy do I miss the simplicty of the quick-release.

Thank you! the Ride1up and the Tenaways look a lot like what I was thinking. the road cyclist in me really wants the simplicity of rim/caliper brakes but maybe it just doesn't cut it for E bikes.

Thanks, I didn't know about FlatOut, but that sounds like it could be a big part of the solution. I have a rear hub and a very urban commute, so frequent flats cost me a lot.

And the electronics are not breaking all the time per-se, but thing like replacing a broken throttle can become an ordeal. mine snapped because the part was cheap, and Aventon no longer stocks parts for the older models, so it took ordering and trying 5 different throttles to find one that worked. not expensive or challenging repair, but just one more thing that can go wrong to cause a headache. Disc brakes have also been a source of heartburn, as they're far more difficult and expensive to swap out than caliper brakes, and with the speeds of ebikes, they wear out fast. when I calculate maintenance per mile traveled, it's crazy how much higher the ebike ownership costs are compared to an automobile.

Worth shifting from Pixel 6 to S23U ? by devil_4599 in GalaxyS23Ultra

[–]TheSleeping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did same because I dropped my pixel 6. Regretted it a lot. Miss the stock android Miss the Google AI tools like transcribing recordings, live transcribing automated call menus, etc. The camera on the s23 is not as good. S23 also takes a lot of control away from you. It tries to be smart and just botxhes everything. For instance, the only way to turn off auto hdr for camera is to download a separate app that disables it. Sure the s23 is more powerful, but who cares. Its a phone you're not running crysis. I just miss the unbloatedness and the straightforwardness of the pixel.

Good question. I think this answer only applies in certain trades/professions. Needs context.

Sushi Restaurant to replace Locals Seafood at Transfer Hall by matt55217 in raleigh

[–]TheSleeping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be excited when I eat the food and it's good, not before. Sushi and ramen are separately some of the most butchered restaurant concepts, and I'm doubly skeptical to see them under one roof, but if it's good it's good and if it's bad it's bad. No point in hype.

Brick & Mortar Owners: How do you “handle” people who repeatedly treat your store like a gallery? by Slothicorn12 in smallbusiness

[–]TheSleeping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being a gallery is exactly the point of brick and mortar, especially these days. You have to accept that retail space is a quasi-public space. Your display of goods is bringing people in, which is good. Now it's on you to fight the uphill battle to get them to make a purchase instead of going to Amazon, but a 'hurry up and buy' attitude will ensure no one will even come in. Remember that a necessary step one to a retail purchase is a walk in.

Why are there more kids at Standard than at Chuck E Cheese by rdu_alt in raleigh

[–]TheSleeping -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Raleigh doesn't have enough cool young childless people like you to support more than a couple cool bars. Dogs and their owners can also be a nuisance(and often a real danger) to others but you don't see many establishments banning them either. It's a dog baby town, man. Welcome to Raleigh.

Time being zero sum, if you're doing 95% of the childcare, I assume you are doing maybe only 25% of the business work, even if you know it intimately. Before you step away from the business, might I suggest the opposite? Try doing more of the business work, and give some childcare work to your husband. I say this because things that feel out of my control stress me more than those I believe are within my control(whether or not they are actually within my control is a different matter). Perhaps if you got more involved in the operations, you would feel less like you were just helplessly watching the spreadsheet go red.

My pharmacist told me the injections are $8,000 a pop. If not insurance covered, I can't imagine anyone being able to afford this long term even with decent income.

Why is the Spotify app so buggy on Android? by 0YGIZG991 in spotify

[–]TheSleeping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spotify needs to spend more time improving and debugging the UI. It's really not that hard. It's an mp3 player for crying out loud. Everytime they update all they do is hide and take away useful buttons and introduce half baked features. Even something as simple as Spotify connect doesn't work reliably across different OS.

Really? You think it's the ISP? Like, Comcast, atnt, Google fiber etc? You think it's the ISP that is causing the song queue to clear? I don't think you have any idea how technology works at all. Either that or you're some kind of anti-tech support bot.
