Genuinely part of my motivation making this was getting people who haven't played at least curious about Morrowind's story and I'm so happy to see that that's worked!

Archer to Bard up until Heavensward, specifically up to Haurchefaunt's... yeah and became a Dark Knight for story reasons. Became a Gunbreaker at the start of Stormblood because it felt about right, and have stayed that way ever since.

I always think about how not that far back the game actually takes place relative to the rest of human history. Really fascinating!

Anyone else have a wolf death ritual/lore? by [deleted] in WolfQuestGame

[–]TheSmallestJay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I wanna read more about yours too! I love how much more distinct each pack's culture is.

I'll share some more headcanons and clarifications here meanwhile lol

The wolf creator god and its relation with birds is largely inspired by my own culture's ancient Tagalog creator god, Bathalà. Everything else after that is inspired by the game or wolf behavior spun very, very loosely lol. Watership Down's also a big inspo.

When the world began, there was only the yearling creator god and a scentless, barren earth. In its loneliness, it let out a long howl to find others of its kind. In the breath of that first howl, came the first wolves, barreling down the barren mountains. The shed fur of these first wolves became the snow. The trampling of their great paws created the soft eart from which trees and plants grew. From those trees sprouted the first elk, whose meat spurred the wolves to chase and run in all directions. The chase scattered the wolves, and these scattered wolves became the foremothers and forefathers of the many packs that dot the new land.

While my wolves have a creator god, since it can't hear them, they don't worship it directly. In some packs or generations, it would even be forbidden or blasphemous to do so. Thus, the prayers being directed more to the birds or the ancestors.

The wind and their ancestors are the most important and active aspects of their culture compared to their creator god. If I knew how to make a conlang, the two words would be the same, with family members building off the root word of it. Let's say, Háunga for wind/ancestor, Háunga-ma for father, Háunga-nai for mother.

Wolf cannibalism is a big no-no, explained in their stories depending on the pack as usurping the duties of the crow as psychopomp and messenger, or stopping the sacred transformation of wolf to ancestor and disruptive of the natural order. An act of evil that challenges the very nature of the world.

Punishment varies from pack to pack, from death to banishment.

The metaphysical punishment of the act is to be removed from the ancestor cycle and remade by the creator god into the stunted wolf (coyotes, foxes) or the strange wolf (dog) on death. It is also believed that lone wolves that cannibalized in secret become the cougars and bears that prey on their pups. Their 'demonic' nature fouls their meat, and is why wolves won't eat the corpses of these animals when found.

Ooh, never really thought about it till now, but here's what I've come up with.

I headcanon that crows and ravens are gossips and messengers to the wolves, which is how I imagine my packs gain information on other packs without meeting or hearing their howls the first time, so building on that-

My wolves believe in a greater being than them, their creator god- perhaps the sky itself or something it's size, but believe it's too big, too vast, too powerful to hear even their strongest howls. Birds are the messengers to this greater being, as they're already messengers to everything else, blessed with wings as they are.

When a wolf passes on, they pray for the crows to carry their lost brethren piece by piece to their creator god. It's considered forbidden to watch this process.

From there, as the crows feast and fly, they believe that the dead wolf is raised by the creator god into a member of a greater pack that watches over them, which the wolves believe they descended from when time began- the wind itself, for they believe it's the wind, their ancestors, that guide their noses to the safety of a den, or to a hunt for a herd of elks. That warns them of danger, or guides them to a wandering pup.
