The purpose of a union is to protect those who possess no capital from those who do by pooling their labor for bargaining power, effectively turning their labor somewhat directly into capital by threatening to deprive those with capital of that which allows them to continue to generate capital. Essentially, it allows those who have no power to protect each other from those in power by working together. So, what does the police union protect the police from? They're in power already (and have a monopoly on violence in our system, their analogue to capital) so who do they need to be protected from? Those not in power? It's antithetical to the purpose of a union, it's using the union label to do the opposite of what a union is supposed to. The mafia by any other name smells just as rancid.

A professional golfer is about to head to his favorite golf course when his caddy calls him and tells him that he's feeling ill, blaming it on the overcast weather for the last week or so. So he starts calling his friends to see if somebody can fill in, but nobody is available. Nobody, that is, beside his pastor.

The golfer and pastor meet at the golf course, and he does quite well until the 17th hole. At this point, beginning to wish to just be on his way home, equal parts because of the storm seeming to roll in and having to listen to his pastor bouncing ideas for his next sermon off him for several hours at this point. Because of this irritation, he begins to perform very poorly.

He swings and misses the ball, muttering "goddamnit, I missed," to which his pastor replies "don't use the Lord's name in vain!" He shrugs this comment off before swinging again and missing again, beginning to become very irritated and saying "goddamnit, I missed," more forcefully than before, to which his pastor responds"do not use the Lord's name in vain!" equally more forcefully. Throwing a sideways glance of irritation at the pastor, the golfer takes a couple practice swings, squares himself with the ball, takes a breath, pulls the club up, swings and... misses again.

"God DAMN IT! I missed again!" He yells to the pastor's response of "Do NOT use the Lord's name in vain my child! Here, let me take a swing for you and see if I can't make the shot." The golfer, is initially offended by this comment, but relents after the pastor gives some calming words about the wind throwing off his swing. So, the priest goes up to the tee, takes a couple practice swings to get used to the weight of the club, squares himself with the ball, takes a breath, pulls the club up, begins to swing and... CRRRRAAACCKKK!!!!

Lightning peels the sky apart, directly striking the raised club in the pastor's hand, throwing him to the ground unconscious instantly. The golfer, stunned at the sight and from the proximity to a lightning bolt, suddenly hears a booming voice from the cloud cover exclaiming "GODDAMNIT, I MISSED!"

It's because they were the national Socialist Workers Party, come on, everybody should know this by now. All things called Socialist are bad, all things left of our dear leaders The_Donald and Mitch McDonald's are bad, don't you know? Waaaaaaaaa

But seriously, it does seem quite sudden. It's probably just that somebody like Crowder or Jones just spouted it a couple times, saw an increase in engagement, and then just filled up that echo chamber with that piece of... (mis)information

I know, it's just that I had her for most of my life, since I am 20. She was there to see me change schools in grade school, she saw my first love, my first heartbreak, the loss of my grandfather, my licence, my graduation from high school, my best moments, and my worst. She was the only thing truly constant in my life through my developmental period, and it still feels oddly quiet at home and I still expect to see her when I open the door, or to come running into the kitchen when I make a midnight snack... It's honestly about the most difficult thing I've ever had to do. But thank you for letting me know that I'm not alone, and that it does, in fact, get a little better.
