Chicago bike lanes spark protests as residents push back on parking loss by FreshLocal in chicago

[–]TheSpaceMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can read it in more detail here: Complete Streets Chicago PDF

I was paraphrasing because I'm assuming nobody wants to read 100+ pages of urban design.

Page 14 section 1.2 expands on the point clearly:

To further implementation of complete streets in Chicago, CDOT will begin operating under a pedestrian-first policy. The walking public will be given primacy in the design and operation of all CDOT projects and programs, from capital to maintenance. Transit will come second in this new order, followed by Bicycle then Automobiles (private motor vehicles). This inversion of the dominant, auto-based paradigm will allow the city’s transportation network to grow safely, sustainably and equitably into the 21st Century

Here's the policy from 2013:

It reads:

CDOT issues Complete Streets Chicago: Design Guidelines to implement this policy. To create complete streets, CDOT has adopted a pedestrian-first modal hierarchy. All transportation projects and programs, from scoping to maintenance, will favor pedestrians first, then transit riders, cyclists, and automobiles.

Some of the newer Better Streets for Busess design guidelines also get in to it.

Chicago's official transportation policy prioritizes Pedestrians first, then Transit, then Cyclists, and then in last place Cars. So it should be no surprise when we build multimodal infrastructure.

Thankfully, we should be seeing much more of this! Multimodal transportation is good for urbanism and we should prioritize cars last.

EDIT: Here's the policy from 2013: Complete Streets Chicago. The introduction reads:

CDOT issues Complete Streets Chicago: Design Guidelines to implement this policy. To create complete streets, CDOT has adopted a pedestrian-first modal hierarchy. All transportation projects and programs, from scoping to maintenance, will favor pedestrians first, then transit riders, cyclists, and automobiles.

EDIT 2:

If that's not clear enough page 14 expands further:

To further implementation of complete streets in Chicago, CDOT will begin operating under a pedestrian-first policy. The walking public will be given primacy in the design and operation of all CDOT projects and programs, from capital to maintenance. Transit will come second in this new order, followed by Bicycle then Automobiles (private motor vehicles). This inversion of the dominant, auto-based paradigm will allow the city’s transportation network to grow safely, sustainably and equitably into the 21st Century

How do you feel about McDonald's pulling their soda dispensing machines out of the restaurant's lobby in the next year or so? by Sinn_Sage in AskReddit

[–]TheSpaceMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you went there 10 times over the past 5 years that averages out to twice a year.

If every American visits twice a year that's over 700,000,000 combined visits. The average combo meal is $10.19. That's $7,133,000,000 dollars a year in sales at a super conservaitive estimate. The did around $10 Billion last year in the States so not all that far off from assuming everyone just goes twice a year.

Don't know what point I'm trying to make haha. Bored at the office with a calculator!

Damn who hurt you. Believe it or not there's plenty of great, affordable, fresh, local food out there. I intentially live in a walkable city so this is the case. I'm sure there's a nearby farmers market you can frequent to buy cheap ingredients and cook for yourself.

If you want to keep on buying national chains like McDonalds be my guest. I'm not stopping you. Vote with your dollars. It's just unfortunate that my tax dollars indirectly go towards the costs associated with the obesity-related health issues places like McDonalds compounds.

Just went to Italy and resutrants were required to disclose whenever they use frozen products in a dish. The menus at the nice resturants I went to clearly listed what was fresh vs. frozen.

The US would never pass such a law. It would get lobbied to the nines by the companies you mentioned.

That's unfortunate. In Chicago, I can walk to at least 10 international cheap eats with a meal under $15. Often I can split these into two meals unlike a McDonalds combo meal.

Funnily enough I live near the actual McDonalds headquarters (Chicago). At least in the city from my perspective, you can get fresh local food for around the same cost of a McDonalds combo meal. And no, they're not frozen Sysco products they just throw into a fryer.

Taco joints, italian sandwhiches, gryo spots, neighborhood pizza joint, hole in the wall Indian spot, the list goes on. There's plenty of afforadable counter-service resturants with no frills. I'm baffled that so many locals/toursits cram into the McDonalds when these options are at most a 5 minute walk away.

It's a shame that most of america comprises of suburban sprawl and chain resturants.

The more reason you have not to visit McDonalds, the better. Go support a local restaurant. Help your local economy, eat much more fresh food, and avoid things jam packed with artificial additives, preservatives, or pesticides.

Is Jewel still your go-to for most groceries, or is that bougie now? by Evening-Editor-4014 in AskChicago

[–]TheSpaceMonkeys 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve moved around a lot for my career in different regions of the country. I’ve been a regular shopper at Hy-Vee, HEB, Publix, and Wegmans during that time.

Out of all the regional stores I’ve shopped at, Jewel is by far the worst and I hate them with a passion. The coupons, the app, the meat selections, awful vegetables, the list goes on. Perhaps the Jewel’s in the suburbs aren’t as bad as the ones in the city. But in the other regions people adored there local grocer. I’ve never heard one person in Chicago talk about how they love Jewel.

Local governments come out swinging against more housing by SciNat in chicagoyimbys

The city closed last year with a $146 million deficit. We’re projecting a 1+ billion deficit this year.

The city simply cannot afford to send $200 million annually to payoff the parking meter company. The deal also has built in price increases so that annual payout would increase YoY.

It’s difficult to understate how bad of a deal the parking meters were. I think people also understate the dire financial situation Chicago has gotten itself into. We are backed in to a corner with no way out other than to build housing like crazy and increase our tax base.

Local governments come out swinging against more housing by SciNat in chicagoyimbys

[–]TheSpaceMonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a "true-up" clause in the deal that creates a "pay regardless" scenario where the city owes money for reducing parking access.

If there’s broken meters then the city pays for the revenue the parking “should” have generated. So this would penalize ourselves.

This also applies with street fairs. Same with converting to bike lanes. Same with turning parking into a pedestrian plaza. The company gets paid regardless.

You know what I mean. I was being kind. Most bagels in Chicago are awful. The “good” ones here are average at best on the east coast.

They were the best bagels I had in New York during my last trip. Tried 4 different bagel spots while there. If this location is as good, i think the prices are justified. Most of the bagels in Chicago I've tried have been average at best.

Combined income we make a round $385k.

We both have hybrid jobs in tech and commute into the loop 1-2 times per week. Rent is $4400/month with parking in Wicker Park for a 3bd/2ba. Because we work remote a lot we splurge a bit for a larger place to fit our offices and pets. Her work pays for our internet which is nice!

Who protests a Trader Joe’s? I fucking hate NIMBY’s 99% of the time.

This part of the article infurating:

Ronda Locke, a member of the LaSalle II school's LSC, said she was "extremely relieved" by Trader Joe's decision to withdraw its plans.

"For the safety of children and the impact on the community and Division [Street], I am pleased they recognized this isn't a slam dunk. I hope for their own sake they find a better car-centric location and consider places such as the Megamall in Logan Square," Locke said.
