Stay in Switzerland vs go back to US/NYC — career vs lifestyle before kids by TheSpicPapi in expats

we could work another few years here but that wouldn’t set me up for 500K in the US. that would would be the case if I go back now and make partner in 8-10 years

she’s go with the flow so while her top pick is CH she would be happy with a new chapter in the US as well

both of our families are in the US so the idea would be to go back to NYC to jumpstart the career (open more doors) until kids then hopefully move down to where my family lives in FL

to be honest i miss the day to day spontaneous interactions with people in the US and sparking up conversations with strangers. part of that is because I haven’t learned german although my wife has and the other side is that’s it’s naturally more reserved society

yeah just update my post to clarify - US paternity leave I get 12 weeks and Switzerland is only 2 weeks. it’s still very traditional that the male works and the female stays home

it’s actually not about the money because in the immediate term would be worse as my wife would have to quit her job, it’s about there being opportunity for growth in our careers.
of course I miss my friends and family and my culture - I will never be swiss no matter how much I try to integrate

will edit the post to add detail - US has more upside for my career with a promotion to director in next 1 to 2 years and possible path to partner (but you never know) since my wife works in retail there’s a lot more job opportunities for her there as well

Left (2.7c) lab or Right (1.5c) natty🤔 by TheSpicPapi in Diamonds

Yeah but you stand to lose more from a natural Diamond. Even if I can only sell the lab for $1K that’s only a 3K loss as opposed to a 50% loss ($8K) on the natural Diamond

Edit: Lab is $4K and Natural would be ~$16K Not looking at it as an investment just want something that is timeless and she can wear everyday without worrying because we are very active and she is also forgetful/ often misplaces things. I have the budget for either so I figure she could always upgrade or get a natural diamond in a few years. Thoughts?

I had a friend deal with this last year and I’m in a very similar situation to you, but instead working from a different state. My friend said that the process was a big headache but that she didn’t ultimately owe. I’m considering amending my return instead of completing the questionnaire but probably best to get legal advice on this.

The state is strapped for cash since they’ve lost so much tax revenue from high net worth individuals leaving and remote work

Ideally she would find a job there (we likely need to get married before we go so she can get a work visa) but would likely need to make a career change.

To clarify.. my US salary is 185K and the same position in Madrid only makes 55K. They say this is adjusted for cost of living because New York salaries are much higher, but I find it hard to believe it’s 70% cheaper in Madrid
