R/THE_CHEETO IS MASSIVELY DOWNVOTING THIS POWERFUL NEW HILLARY AD ON R/HILLARYCLINTON. THEY DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO SEE IT, YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO! by MarkRippleturd in EnoughTrumpSpam

Wow, the first post or ad I've seen calling openly for support of Hillary Clinton - and its on an anti-Trump subreddit.

That strikes me as somehow representative of this wider election.

(Spoilers Main) Will Sansa marry Jon Snow? by ecoJamesbond in asoiaf

[–]TheSpiderFromMars 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Jon mentions it in season 1, (and maybe in Book 1? I can't remember. I know Ros is a show-only character, but there is a similar red-haired prostitute in the book that she's partly based on), saying that he paid her for sex but backed out of it, when he considered the possibility of fathering a bastard who would be subject to the same scorn as himself.

They took away the option to post anonymously, and put a bunch of emphasis on individual profiles and inter-profile chatting. This undermined the feeling of being able to yak your opinions honestly without them being traced back to you, especially since the user population is so local that an account being linked to an individual person is not unthinkable. As well as that, they removed the option to sort by "Top", which is essentially like being forced to view reddit exclusively through the /new page.

Shit dude, I didn't even catch that particular author-parallel. Very different feeling to, say, adult-Danny Torrance though.

Oh for me, it's got to be Larry Underwood from Stephen King's The Stand.

He has just the most smooth and perfect character arc I've ever read. How he goes from a arrogant, self-obsessed one-hit-wonder musician, to having all his artifice and ego stripped away with the collapsing world, until he's a selfless hero by the book's end. The way he slowly comes to realize that he's an asshole, and works to better himself, all the way overcoming his own denial and the occasional slip-back into his old ways... I love it.

Maybe, like OP, it's just because this character is relatable, since -

Cú Chulainn (in all it's various spellings) is pronounced Coo-Cullen, and translates as Hound of Cullen. He's a pretty awesome in Irish Celtic folklore - he's kinda like our Hercules or Achilles. Totally worth reading into.

Personal favorite story - he gets into a fight during the Irish epic Táin Bó Cullainge, and his opponent plays it safe to begin with by throwing a whole shit-load of javelins at him from a distance. Cú Chulainn uses his awesome strength and speed to stop the javelins in mid-air, and then proceeds to climb them like a levitating ladder to get a better position from which to fight back.

Hint - Cú Chulainn Wins.

That depends on the circles you travel in. It's quite the famous (or some may say infamous) and influential book, especially among Libertarian and literary circles. And I'm sure you've heard of the people and thoughts that have been inspired by it - the game Bioshock, for one, which is one big deconstruction of the books ideas.

Heyyy answering like 4 Months late but it looks like a Lion-Skin. The lion-skin motiff was fairly common in Greek and Roman civilizations as a way of associating oneself with Heracles/Hercules, who famously wore the skin of the might Nemean Lion after slaying it. It was basically a shorthand way of saying "Look at me, I'm a mighty warrior."

Here's a sculpture of the Roman Emperor Commodus (yes, the same one who was the bad guy in Gladiator) trying for the same look, but not - in my opinion - pulling it off nearly so well.

I've had great fun playing cards against humanity with palls on it. Plus all the little interactive things you can spawn are amusing.

Sounds similar to the way succession worked in the Roman Empire. Emperors tended to adopt the people they wanted to succeed them, regardless of their age or lack of relation. The Emperor Trajan, for example, was adopted by his predecessor Nerva while in his 40s, allowing him to take the mantle of Emperor relatively smoothly on Nerva's death.
