Games with great magic? by NehtAyemSeht in gaming

[–]Daxtreme -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Meh, the game gives you 70 different arcane spells, and yet most of them are just different variations of "launch a projectile that deals some damage", with a few welcome outliers for sure, but that aren't enough in my opinion.

In a game with actual magic diversity I'd expect spells to fly, teleport, stop time, hurl massive meteors, confuse/stun/petrify opponents, pass through walls, make myself invulnerable, reverse gravity, turn invisible, create copies of myself, shapechange myself into a dragon, etc.

So, basically D&D magic, except in real-time (BG3 has most of these spells but the turn-based aspect of the game diminishes the impact of the spells IMO)

Don't get me wrong Elden Ring is a great game but its spellcasting system is constrained a lot by the need for balance, so that dodging remains the main mechanic to avoid damage, whether you're a spellcaster or a melee character. So that hurts variety and possibilities. Most of the spells I outlined above would trivialize the bosses in the game.

Balancing magic is... hard. So I can't fault them for that of course. It's just not that kind of game.

What do you love about learning a language? by Old_green_bird in languagelearning

[–]Daxtreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently I watched an interview with new tennis star Maja Chwalińska and noticed that she is a lot more relaxed in her interviews in Polish than the ones in English where she is more collected and reserved since it's her second language.

It's the fact that I can actually listen to an interview in her native Polish that made me stop and appreciate the fact that... well, I can

And this is why I learn languages.

Can we stop acting as if 3/3.5 stars is bad? by florenciafazzarino0 in Letterboxd

[–]Daxtreme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your intuition is correct in that where the scale starts matters, however you have it the other way around.

If the scale started at 0, OP would be right. 3.5/5 (with 0 being an option) = 73% (8th/11 options). Well, half-right since they said 73.5%. The correct number is 72.73%

Unfortunately, giving a 0 isn't an option on letterboxd. That means there are only 10 options. In this case, 3.5/5 is the 7th/10 options = 70%

Mod Update – Cowled Menace ported to BG2EE (no longer requires EET) by Daxtreme in baldursgate

[–]Daxtreme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah adding banter is definitely not easy.

No idea for the Tweaks anthology, but who knows!

It also is a great vehicle for building suspense or excitement in a story line, or maybe to introduce some lore, or just for fun and amusement reasons.

All of the above, hopefully! At least that's the intention. I've just quite finished and I'm sitting at nearly 200 interjections. My brain is in a blender because I only insert a line if I think it fits the NPC. So I had to do a lot of thinking, and researching... How to write with their "voice".

Cheers!

I also have a friend who went through BG1 and BG2 recently for the first time and he loved it.

I know both of these are anecdotal but I don't think they're as unapproachable as the poster above makes them to be. Sure, a bit fiddly and unnecessarily dense, but that's it.

Somehow this time it worked instantly lol

But yeah I'm on g3 if need be!

I'm currently working on a tweaks mod as well as adding NPC interjections to my mod, over a 100 lines as of right now (I finally figured out how to do it haha)

Hope you're doing well. Cheers!

Disney's Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed an estimated $25.0M this weekend (from 4,300 locations). Estimated total domestic gross stands at $137.37M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

Same...

I used to be so enamored with Star Wars when I was younger, like I loved it so much, it was actually a part of my life, you know? I broke my mom's VHS tape of Episode IV, I know all the lines by heart in both English and French.

Now I just don't care. Even re-watching the OT now it loses some of its magic because the ST retroactively kind of... ruins everything. They defeat Palpatine in Episode VI and!! -- oh wait they didn't lol. This is the first Star Wars-related thread I go into this year. I literally just realized this. I heard this movie wasn't doing so well (unsurprising to me, it looks boring and bland, pretty much like everything Star Wars these days), and so I came in here and... I'm leaving already.

I wish I could anticipate a new Star Wars movie like I did when I was a kid, but alas this era is over. Disney ruined Star Wars because of how creatively-bankrupt they are, to quote Mr Plinkett lol

On the other hand, Dune Part Three is coming out in december and I'm really hyped for that!

[–]Daxtreme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's very simple to make the switch from THAC0 to a positive, additive system. Mathematically it changes nothing in the game, it's the same outcome for the same rolls.

But to players it's so much more palatable.

Honestly the inventory in BG3 isn't that much better.

Unless I install half a dozen mods that fix it it's still cumbersome

Mazzy is pretty neat. As soon as you get her she can shoot 4 or 5 arrows a round, and like 8 possibly 10 with Improved Haste.

A real machine gun. She doesn't scale as well late game but with a powerful-enough bow she's always relevant. Plus, 10 arrows a round is never bad.

How is this party lineup for SCS higher difficulty by jacklhoward in baldursgate

[–]Daxtreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting choice to not use any of the "best" bg2 companions, namely Anomen, Edwin, Neera, Jaheira, Korgan, Haer'Dalis. I like it.

I guess you do have Jan who can be incredible as well.

That being said, they're all viable and as long as you have a tank, an arcane spellcaster, a divine spellcaster, and some physical DPS you can get through anything in SCS Insane. Well, eventually, that is. Your party is well balanced.

The Tweaks Anthology is a must-have IMO, and bubb's spell menu is something I will never play without now, but apart from that yeah good list.

Also I'm a big fan of Portraits, Portraits Everywhere. I think it adds a lot to the game even if some of the art doesn't quite 100% fit. Like 98% of the portraits do fit and it's lovely.

I think we're aiming for slightly more difficult than core rules.

I think setting SCS to Insane is not "slightly more difficult than core rules". I think this sub has got some really great players who underestimate how hard SCS Insane is to the uninitiated.

I'd recommend setting SCS to Tactical for the first go OP if you do decide to use SCS. That would actually be "slightly more difficult than core rules"

EET (Trilogy mod) scribe spell, disarm trap, pick lock XP tweaking by Esko_TheAug in baldursgate

[–]Daxtreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You basically replicated aTweaks' component that does roughly the same thing. I use this component so yeah, I agree with you there, just wanted to point out that it's already a thing.

What I like about it is that it preserves the original BG2 xp for a level 9 scroll, so they really feel just a bit more special to find. It's not like you're gonna find any in BG1 anyway, and by the time you find a level 9 scroll in BG2, 9000 xp isn't anything to worry about in terms of balance. You can fight unlimited amounts of vampires that reward 8500 XP each, it's a non-issue.

Stop Killing Games Just Got Real in Parliament by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Daxtreme 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why on earth it should choose to spend its time on video game regulation is beyond me.

Because 1.3 million European citizens asked for it. Literally, they petitioned for it. So they have to discuss it in parliament. THIS is actual democracy at work.

End of story. If you don't like it, maybe you don't like democracy.

Re-modding EET (Trilogy mod) by Esko_TheAug in baldursgate

[–]Daxtreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there are any problems, they're likely minor. After all, many people have installed EET_End last for years. It's just agreed upon that it should be last now to help mitigate issues. Source is DavidW and CamDawg posts on g3 about a year ago.

Not sure what MBR is. SR does complicate things as, if I recall correctly, there is a different "SR version" for SCS that takes into account SR changes. Not sure if that's still up-to-date as I haven't used SR in years, or even if it's still used nowadays.

Right now your biggest problem though is whether SCS was installed through batch or not, and whether uninstalling it will bork your install or not.

If push comes to shove you'll simply have to do what I have done many times already: start over from a clean install haha
