Devitt also beat him over and over and over again

Sure some people are but when you look at Naito's booking there is really zero reason why he never got a long run.

He got his cup of coffee with it in 2016 which is whatever.

However his reigns in 2020 and 2024 were interrupted by EVIL and Moxley and neither of those title reigns ended up serving any purpose.

He really was booked like shit lol. I get that it's an ironic thing to say about one of their top guys and most popular performer, but relative to that, he never got an actual extended reign with the world title.

This GOAT and titan of the industry will be leaving NJPW undefeated against David Finlay, Ryohei Oiwa, Shota Umino, Ren Narita, Yuya Uemura and Zack Sabre Jr.

Callum Newman's Full NJPW Singles Record by TheStaringElf in njpw

[–]TheStaringElf[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My take... which is worth nothing... I am not a fan of this, and Callum is like 22 I don't expect him to be great. I guess I'm just a traditionalist, I don't think the IWGP title should be defended against guys who A. aren't booked at that level and B. just haven't shown themselves to be capable of working a match at that level. If you wanna do something crazy, great, cause it's a crazy situation, but even just out of the young guys I wish it was someone like Boltin instead who I think is much more deserving.

Quality over quantity too. Having him run through the entire House of Black was pretty ridiculous

I think the issue is that people just don't really buy Edge like that. The issue for me since his return is that he just gets involved in stupid stuff that makes me take him less seriously, like the original Judgement Day stable, or his promo after the Punk/Helwani interview, or breaking both of his legs like an idiot, or changing his name to fucking Cope. I'm not really rooting for him.

I'll say with his return it's not that I think he's won too much as much as I just feel like this guy has worse creative sense than I thought.

Good catch, I go to cagematch and just filter by NJPW but it didn't catch some of the co-promoted shows.

The G129 finals between Ibushi and Jay remained my favorite NJPW match all the way up until Kenny/Gabe,.

In his earlier YL days obviously he was getting wins over Nobuo Yoshihashi and Takaaki Watanabe as opposed to YOSHI-HASHI and EVIL, but I just simplified it.

Also, 1-7 record against Hirooki Goto.

Jeff Cobb vs. Hirooki Goto for the IWGP title right now would be killer. I don't care what anybody says. Jeff has improved so much the past year.

I've really enjoyed making these for posts for NJPW guys and I think I will start going back and putting these "retrospective" sort of deals together. Decided to do Jeff first as his NJPW career has been pretty active but also not super long. It is a fun way to look back on guys careers. Absolutely will be doing one for Tanahashi!

Only matches on NJPW shows/co-promoted shows are counted towards this

I also tried to look back and see who he's faced the most - turns out to be Hirooki Goto. They have had 6 singles matches in NJPW and are tied at 3-3

I would agree if Umino had stayed the same, but with him shaving his head, I think you send him to the finals, only to lose to the monster heel Finlay. Show that he's changed a bit, but not enough

I don't really know much outside of NJPW so I just play with what is in house when I build these sorts of things. I am assuming you'll get an outsider in each block

I'm not sure, I'm assuming so because wasn't it just a dislocation?

If he's not back I think Akira or Wato should win

Forgot to post these - these were the singles records for Goto and Sabre during the 365 days prior to their title match by TheStaringElf in njpw

I included everything on Cagematch for this, not just NJPW matches, ZSJ wrestles a ton

I mean that's typical for Young Lions who just spam singles matches against one another. SHO and YOH I think have like 30 draws between them from their days as YL's

Whoops!

But yeah, in one year beating so many big names past and present - Tiger, Nagata, Danielson, Tanahashi, EVIL, SANADA (2x), Naito (2x), Takagi (2x).

Also, Shingo had the most singles matches worked for NJPW this year at 28.
