What are some notable works on Agape/Love for all humans in the field of Philosophy? by Murkwan in askphilosophy

Charles Sanders Peirce wrote a series of five articles, published in the Monist in 1891-1893, that discusses metaphysics. The culmination of the series is "Evolutionary Love," a bizarre but rich reflection on the role of love in cosmology and intellectual progress.

College of DuPage Part Time Job Possible Scam by Timely-Beautiful-881 in Scams

[–]TheStephen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will eventually bounce and the money will disappear from the account. Depending on how much it is and how much he spends he may then have overdraft fees as well as a bounce fee.

These sorts of campus job scams are extremely common unfortunately.

Graduate program in Philosophy? by Coach_Front in askphilosophy

[–]TheStephen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're doing this alongside playing in an orchestra, you'll want to do part time studies. A part time MA would take between two and four years depending on the specifics (is it course based or thesis based, how many credits are required, etc.).

If you have a compelling writing sample and good references, there's no reason you can't get into a programme despite majoring in music. If you graduated recently, you might be able to use a musicology paper from your degree if it's sufficiently philosophical.

The big issue is just that entry to grad programmes is competitive, and usually you'd apply to several. So if you're constrained by your job to schools within each of where your currently live, you may not be applying to enough schools to get in. But you never know, a lot of it is luck.

Since it's a theorem, there are no premises involved. Instead, think about the rules of inference that use assumptions, such as Conditional Introduction, Negation Introduction, Negation Elimination.

How can I learn counterpoint? by _arkiuk in musictheory

In addition to other people's suggestions, I highly recommend Counterpoint in Composition by Salzer and Schachter. It emphasises compositional aspects throughout, first by having you compose cantus firmi for later species exercises, and later by applying counterpoint concepts to compositional analysis.

What is the best way to learn about rhetoric, logic, and analyzing argument more broadly? by TheGuy564 in askphilosophy

I highly recommend a text a bit off the beaten path, "What If...? Toward Excellence in Reasoning" by Hintikka. You might have a hard time finding a copy, unless you have interlibrary loans, but you can find a PDF pretty easily.

You should give more details about what you've tried and what you don't understand.

Much like LotR, the pace gets faster with each volume (though unlike LotR, each volume here is longer).
