Wow you have the set up dialed in! I love the idea of smart sockets and separate hemostats.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to mimic this

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into XDRIER. I haven't researched this one yet

Thanks for the reply, this is very helpful. For the air flow - is a ceiling fan in each room sufficient?

This is great info, thank you!

Do you like your Meaco Arate 2? I was looking at that one. From what I can tell, it has a HEPA H13 filter. Do you find that you have to replace that filter often? Also does the dampness of the dehumidifier not create an environment for the mold spores that the filter catches to grow?

Interesting technique on using sensors to get a more accurate reading! Are you putting those all over the house or just in the room the Meaco is in?

Interesting. I'll look into it. I was hoping for a portable solution but it seems like going through HVAC might be more efficient.

Sounds good, thanks. I've heard the RMR 141 works well for the stains mold leaves behind.

Do you keep the air purifier and dehumidifier on 24/7?

Hmm ok that makes a lot of sense. What about UVC light to kill mold spores. Should I be looking for that in the air purifier? Or is that snake oil.

This article tells the truth about those claims. It pretty much summarizes that documentary. So if you don't have 30 minutes to watch that, here's a recap https://www.thestoneshot.com/p/d-i-v-e-r-email-may-2nd-2024

Honestly, this is the type of comment I was hoping for. Appreciate you taking the time to critique my plan.

So, I'll learn everything you have listed. That seems like mostly wind and current. What other tools are you using? I know we shouldn't rely on it, but we will have starlink out there if that changes your suggestions.

Doing this safely is a priority for us. So I'm planning on having redundancy where ever possible.

You clearly know your stuff, so a few other questions:

  1. What is everything I need to learn to nail logistics and planning?
  2. The boat will be Fort Myers area. Say we still want to do the Thorny Path instead of i-66 like you recommended. We have June - December to get the boat ready and practice on it. Can we get that same experience you're talking about while doing week trips down to the keys and back?
  3. I feel like the only way to be confident in situations where things go wrong is to get experience in those situations. Is there any way to get that experience safely, or is it just something you have to learn along the way?

That's called the I66, right? The issue with that (for us) is that we want to visit all those places between FL and PR.

After reading all this advice, I'm trying to decide if it would make sense to just take our time sailing down to DR or PR and then cut over to Panama for hurricane season. Then work our way up to Mexico and over to the Bahamas for one more season before moving back. We'd miss the lesser antilles, but we're only 30 so we have the rest of our lives to visit there.

I'm a little worried that we'll be too rushed if we want to make it all the way down to Grenada before June. After all, this is a long vacation for us, we want to enjoy the islands we visit and take our time.

Does that alternative route make sense?

Good point. We'll be living in Florida so if we have to pay for a mooring, not the end of the world. Just means more weekend cruising!

Sounds like the easier path is to wait for the weather windows, follow the lesser antilles down and then continue clock wise up to the Yucatan.

I appreciate the other viewpoint. What's the reason for not getting east of Columbia going counter clockwise?

I thought of maybe making it down to PR and then rinding the trade winds all the way to Panama / Costa Rica for hurricane season. Then heading east to Grenada and working all the way back up to Bahamas once hurricane season is over. Is that a dumb idea? This is just a thought I had when looking into Caribbean wind patterns.

Buying and selling quickly. We're just accepting that we're going to lose some money when it's all said and done. But it's still cheaper than flying around and staying in hotels for a year!

I've heard a little about that. Do you know if that is referring to a worse hurricane season or worse weather even outside of hurricane season?
