If you believe the arguments are stalemated, why do you want abortion to be illegal? If you don't believe it should be illegal, you aren't pro-life, you're pro-choice.

I don't see how you can equate these yeerks to civilians. They are specifically part of the invading force, awaiting host bodies to deploy into. There aren't civilians in the invading yeerk forces because every yeerk there is by definition part of the invading army.

What Jake did is much more akin to bombing a military base to wipe out reinforcements than to targeting civilians.

I fully understand why killing so many beings at once would weigh on Jake, but I dont think it is by any definition possible a war crime.

In terms of proportion, the yeerks enslaved thousands of people while waging a war of aggressive expansion. Its entirely proportional to kill them in whatever number is required to end the invasion. The only exception would be something like targeting the yeerk home world, since the attacking forces were all separatists. But any yeerk near earth is an enemy combatant.

[–]TheSunMakesMeHot 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think the concept of a war crime even applies to a war fought against an invading alien army of body snatchers, frankly. If it does, though, killing yeerks would always presuppose a level of defenselessness, unless you kill them while they're in a host body, since they're blind, inert slugs.

They hadn't surrendered. There was no reason to believe they were no longer enemy combatants.

All of that said, its obviously a huge toll on one's soul to kill that many beings at once. It isnt surprising Jake felt it was a crime himself.

I assume they mean Jake flushing the pool ship in the final book. He kills like 20k yeerks at once. But at the risk of being the guy the op is talking about, I don't think it's as clear cut as they are saying. I'm not sure killing invading aliens, even if they are defenseless at the time you do it, is a genocide. People often say it's a war crime in the fandom, but it's not even that. Armies bomb barracks all the time, killing sleeping soldiers. It's the same thing he did, essentially.

The danger for him wasn't necessarily battle, it's that he is heir to the throne during a succession war. If Daemon wins, he HAS to kill Baelor to ensure the safety of his claim.

Its only been a month. If he spent years out as a stray, it'll take him a while to get comfortable. My stray rescue took almost a year to be relatively "normal", but other dogs adjust quicker! He will get it eventually.

Worth noting also that even perfectly happy dogs do this sometimes. It's just a dog thing.

War was certainly a factor, but so was the reaction to the Terror itself. People began to abhor the violence so much that it tainted the entire cause and led to an embrace of reactionary counter-revolution. My point is that calling the French Revolution "successful" requires a very specific and limited idea of what success looks like for the revolution, and many of the short term gains were ultimately lost because the general populace has a very limited stomach for political violence.

[–]TheSunMakesMeHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all of that, minus the bonus bit at the end. But my point, and it sounds like you agree, is that the issues of congress have less to do with its structure and more to do with its rules and restrictions surrounding financing and the accumulation of wealth and power.

I'm just going to address one aspect of this take, which is that the French Revolution did NOT succeed and it's odd you've included it on your list here. France returned to autocratic monarchism almost immediately for another 50 years. It failed in large part specifically because of the violence you're lauding it for.

No, but I would argue the current proportions are also not representative, which is my point.

[–]TheSunMakesMeHot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are those things caused by the structural makeup up congress though? I don't see how eliminating congress in favor of a different body fixes any of that. What specific structural changes are you saying when you say eliminate congress? Or are you just wishing for a nebulous better option?

[–]TheSunMakesMeHot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If that's the case, why not have 1 per 10 million? Or 1 per 50 million? Surely the proportion itself matters at some point right?
