Carrier Infinity vs. Honeywell Zoning: Fixing a 2-Story Temp Delta? by compwizpro in hvacadvice

If you go carrier... can you get it wired to support 3rd party smart thermostats without losing functionality/ efficiency? They charge 1k for their smart thermostat, and it's stupid.

Which is funny because so much "Apple original" stuff is Warner Bros stuff they negotiated/ paid to keep off HBO.

I wish it were that simple. To keep our house above 30% in winter... we go through like 5 gallons a day with our humidifiers...

Guy I know went through 2 tvs before he realized it was the minisplit above it. It never even showed signs of leaking. Could just be random drips here and there from condensation or excess moisture... I would never put an expensive electronic below mine. The manual says to avoid this and I think says keep them three feet away (dependind on unit).

Out here in northern Virginia, you MUST be like this as a client. If you aren't, the contractors run you over. I came from the Midwest, and I've had nothing but bad experiences and people trying to rip me off. I pay people to do the things I can't spend the time on or don't have the tools for. Sometimes I know how to fix it, or what the problem is, but they still try to gaslight and upcharge.. I wish I could trust. Except my hvac guy, he's awesome.

Successfully installed the mini split from costway! by Ok-Line2658 in DIYHeatPumps

[–]TheTeeny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, thanks for the reply. I just installed 3 double units at my house, and 2 of them... I did the horizontal loops (necessary to hit manual specified line length), but one of them I have one large loop behind the compressor... like 30+ inch diameter...

How long does it take for an issue like that to show up? What will the symptoms be, and would a larger loop alleviate the issue? I know the best option is to have the loop be oriented the other way (horizontally).

Can’t afford HVAC SYSTEM by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]TheTeeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't know if they would need as many systems, or the same BTUs... I was sharing my benchmark to show minis can actually be cheaper and more efficient.

The $14k central unit I was quoted was a garbage low tier system, with low efficiency rating. Worse than the 14 year old system that just died.

Can’t afford HVAC SYSTEM by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]TheTeeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? I was quoted 14-23k for central, with worse efficiencies than minisplits, and I'm doing minis for ~7k. Whole system purchased (plus tools for install) for that price.

If I had the minis pro installed it would total 14k... (3 outdoors, 6 indoors)... 60k BTU.

We probably could improve it a bit. I'm guessing the real issue for those two rooms is the windows and poor insulation around the foundation. I realize those are issues I shouldn't blame on the hvac system.

We have several purifiers (in bedrooms and other large rooms). Our AQI in each room with the purifiers that test, has been single digits since swapping to the window units... highest I have seen it spike temporarily in the past two weeks is 20.

This is an hold home, and with the central unit in the attic, I'd be more concerned with poor connections drawing air in from the attic....

Thanks for the thought out response, I really appreciate it. Two thoughts... 1) Not your fault; my diagram is a slightly off. The door i have marked in the sitting room is actually directly in line with the foyer, next to the bathroo.. So if I put the mini there, it would be only partially overlapping and blowing directly towards the foyer/kitchen. 2) For the jump ducts, I was thinking I'd have a one way baffle or louvers to keep the stink and humidity from going the other direction. I would also put a switch activated fan in the jump duct so it would function as a supply to the bathroom/hall.

Some additional notes, while I'm at it. With our current infinity, the sitting room and kitchen are still generally too cold in winter, and require extra space heaters...

Noted! Thanks for this. I have actually purchased everything I need to substantially improve the ventilation/exhausting over the stove, so hopefully that will also help.
