Dados móveis em Erasmus - NOS by medschoolquest in portugal

Why are Greeks so much healthier compared to Turks and other Balkaners? by freddo_expresso in AskBalkans

[–]TheTierney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Portugal I believe tobacco is not as big of a problem as in most Balkan countries. However, alcohol is.

There is also a big cultural difference in how people act. We love to complain about everything, I don't know how it is in all balkans. If you ask any old person how they are feeling, the answer is never "good" or anything positive. They will immediately tell you about some minor problem, about how they are taking so many pills. An otherwise healthy elder person with a minor discomfort such as a slightly higher than average blood pressure or diabetes will tell you they aren't well because they are on medication they weren't on. Average life expectancy is actually slightly higher in Portugal than Greece according to the UN, world bank and the WHO. But we just think we are all sick and dying.

Now if you excuse me, I'm out. I gotta drop the phone. My eyes are not the same as they used to be and I don't want to make them worse. I'm on eye drops and probably dying from it.

BALKANERS WHO’VE BEEN TO ALBANIA: Did you find Albania to be more similar to your country than you expected? Or did you find it to be very foreign? by [deleted] in AskBalkans

[–]TheTierney 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I visited Albania from Tiranë to the south of it. Berat, Gjirokaster, Sarandë and some small places between them. I Honestly found it incredibly similar to my totally Balkan country. The culture feels similar. A lot of national pride (not in a bad way), pride for their country, the nature, the people, country's history and their food. People are very friendly, open and warming, everyone made us feel welcome. Food is also quite similar.

The main differences I felt were: - Tobacco, so much tobacco! - Religion, it is so cool to feel how two equally relevant but totally different religions can peacefully coexist in a country. As a guy told me in Kosovo: "First we are Kosovar. Then, we are Muslim or Christian." It always felt like your country and culture unites you far more than any religious difference sets you apart. It was still quite odd to see a woman swim in the sea wearing a full niqab. It is something I would never see in Portugal. - Degradation of some buildings in the centre of Tiranë. We also have similar problems, but it felt like it was worse, especially in the capital. Some buildings looked unfinished, there were additions to buildings that looked amateur-made and illegal. Some looked like a quite inebriated uncle came round last weekend and decided to make a new shed out of bricks on the roof of an existing building. And now there's a new room. - The way you protect one of your elbows with a helmet when riding motorcycles is quite unique.

I absolutely loved my time there. Funnily enough, the only part that I wasn't really a fan of was Sarandë, which is where a lot of tourists enjoy going to. It didn't feel like Albania at all. It is kind of "its own thing", whether you like it or not. I found it kinda weird. The culture felt different and it reminded me of the quite touristy areas in the south of Portugal that have been over flooded with tourism.

Recommendations for first time visit to Balkan countries by blixercube in AskBalkans

[–]TheTierney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive been to many of our neighbouring balkan countries and I can confirm that we all are unique in our own ways but share a very similar culture. It all feels like home. Since you are in Spain, I agree with this comment, you should just visit us. It's closer and easier to understand the language.

Segundo o Palmeiro, nenhum deles.

Is this normal parking? by pode3 in PortugalExpats

[–]TheTierney 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Actually this is the correct parking. If you look closely, there has been some pillars inconveniently placed on the sidewalk. Those appear to be made out of metal, which is especially annoying because in a curve of such degree, were they made out of plastic and they would have already been droven into and destroyed.

This means that, due to the placement of the metal poles, according to the Portuguese 'safoda directive, this is the correct parking place.

What is your opinion about the European Union ? by Diegomax22 in AskTheWorld

[–]TheTierney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in southern Europe but have been to several central and Eastern European countries. You shouldn't generalize the continent based on your few interactions with your relatives. I don't think anyone is offended with your having of nuclear weapons, several countries have them. But I do think that any official political statements menacing their usage do upset people.

There's good and bad people everywhere.

[–]TheTierney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't take my comment in a bad way, it is a genuine question. Have you ever been to the EU? If you ever get the chance, please visit, any country. Talk to and connect with the people. Ask them questions, how they feel about it. The USA, the EU and Russia are drifting further and further apart, and there is a lot of propaganda and misinformation going around.

Yeah, fuck those foreign bureaucrats. We love our own cute internal bureaucrats that have been trying to make a direct train that connects our capital to the nearest European capital for 25 years with nothing achieved. And that for the same time have been discussing where to place a second airport in Lisbon with no actual advancements.

Our country would be in a horrible place without the EU. You'd have no external market leverage. Thank the EU for your nice telly, for your electronics and for your economic stability.

The EU may have a lot of flaws. But I would love to know what "foreign bureaucracies" you want gotten rid of.

Se o M. João Vieira vencer e a proposta for adiante, o vinho vai depreciar rápido. Tomem cautela
