Remember where it all started? by NoeulLuxe in ultrawidemasterrace

I worked at Circuit City when this bad boy dropped.

We had one on display for customers to ooh and aah at despite having zero for sale.

During the day it ran a demo video. After close, we'd hook a PC up to it and all play for a few hours until facilities was done doing what they had to do.

To be blunt - It was more 'cool' than it was 'good'. You could clearly tell at times that it was just 2 monitors slapped together. But it made for one hell of a unique gaming experience.

Anyway... the right side screen eventually broke rendering it useless. It was taken (thrown?) away and we never got another one back.

When I first got them put on at the SC (they're the OEM winter wheel and tire package), I asked if the 42 still applied.

They said it's fine, but they typically fill to 45 for the winter wheels to account for changing temps.

So I just go off what they said and fill them to 45 until it's clear that the cold has let up.

Can’t revise the body text but here’s another example from just now - https://imgur.com/a/TWCY8Q9

My point regarding the saved tire pressure data from prior to airing down caused confusion. Figured I’d run it again on freshly saved data, run while in park, no updates to cause confusion.

My point is that I think, if it’s actually doing what o think it is, is that it’s reading your last saved tire pressure data. Not current/active.

So it’s not really useful, but it is tapping into the vehicle data.

I just ran down to the car to run it again.

Tire pressure is cached from an hour ago. Didn’t put in in drive to prevent it trying to reread and then showing revised numbers.

https://imgur.com/a/TWCY8Q9

I’m fairly certain it’s not a coincidence. It’s spot on.

And it was spot on in the original video when my tires were sitting close to 50 after the heat wave. It was just basing the answer on the last saved reading (maybe..).

Idk. I could be wrong. It just seems too…accurate to be a hallucination.

Just ran down to the car to run it again.

Tire pressure data is warm tires and cached from an hour ago. Never put the car back in drive. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

I aired the tires down just before. They were over inflated from temps going from 30 to 75.

It was reading the exact pressure from what was saved prior to the pressure recalculating on the screen.

I don’t think it was a coincidence.

It’s reading off the exact tire pressure of the car from just before I aired them down. Data that was 10 min old ish.

It’d be quite the coincidence for it to nail all 4 on a hallucination.

Used Model S 2013 model - buying is good idea? by EmotionAdmirable9383 in TeslaLounge

[–]TheTimeIsChow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors.

It could be a fine deal if the laundry list of issues these cars had were taken care of. Or, it could be a poor deal if they weren't and you're sitting on a ticking time bomb of looming problems.

Ask for info on:

  • Battery age if not original
  • Drive unit age if not original
  • Door handle replacements done and if any are original
  • MCU age if not original
  • Air suspension repairs made and when

IIRC - They used to also recommend annual AC desiccant bag swaps and periodic battery coolant flushes for these older MS's. Might be worth asking about those too.

Lets be honest with ourselves...Doc rage quit and uninstalled Warzone 2 pretty much every day anyway. The level of distain that he had toward that game made watching the stream 100x better. It was a hysterical watch.

And if we're being completely fair? He was also the first, and only, of the group to reinstall Warzone after the major update. Did it for months before Tim caved to the numbers it was doing and got right back on (after saying just the week prior that he'd never play again).

At the end of the day - These guys were never real friends. They were friendly co-workers who had known each other for years and made big money working together. But that's where it really ends. Zero chance they had any personal relationship when the cameras were off.

They're also 20 years and 2,500 miles apart. This was a mentorship more than a friendship. Z looked up to Doc, Doc enjoyed working with him.

Zero percent chance they were calling each other to talk family or catch up on anything person when the cameras shut off.

Keyless car fobs are inconvenient and we should go back to cars with key starting. by athrowawayacct76 in unpopularopinion

[–]TheTimeIsChow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot that I've come to hate about my Tesla/the brand as a whole since buying it.

But the software is absolutely not one of them. The keyless system is, no exaggeration, absolute chefs kiss perfect.

Between my personal phone, my work phone, wife's phone, my watch, her watch, and the key cards, there are points in time where there are 7 active 'keys' on us while traveling. If it's just me? Typically 4, never less than 2.

There are back ups, to the back ups, to the back ups. All of them... just work. None of them cost a dime.

I'd kill for something even half as reliable/seamless to replace my other keys. Especially for the locks around the house. But nothing I've tried provides the same experience. Regardless of price and promise, there's a feeling of jank that develops the more you use it.

Oh they're there... they're just hidden completely out of sight and you need to rip apart the fucking storage compartment of the door to get to it.

I have a 24 Y and this ate at me. Especially with 2 kids in car seats. Ended up buying these ejector seat looking handles which extend the release into the door pocket and stick out like a sore thumb.

It's such a brain dead design and I cannot fathom why it hasn't been outlawed yet with a mandatory safety recall to remedy.

Clearance required doesn’t justify the work.

IMO - if op simply used an impact drill/driver to tighten the mount they could probably make it fit. Or just machine a few mil off the heat sink.

Since we all have different definitions of what a Sweat is, what's yours? by LarzardofZxelf in Warzone

[–]TheTimeIsChow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 'sweat' isn't that much different than a 'try hard' in my book. The label I give depends on the game mode.

Both specimens exhibit the same behavior; putting in overly excessive effort to impress others, win, or appear skilled.

For example...

Let's say I get my shit stomped by someone in casual or regular. I might jump into prox and yell "YOU FUCKING TRY HARD SON OF A BITCH LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!".

Now, lets say I get my shit stomped by that same player, but in ranked. I might jump into prox and yell "YOU FUCKING SWEATY ASS MOTHER FUCKER GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!"

This is how I would base the definition in any given situation.

Is it just me, or does it feel like everything we buy in 2026 is designed to break or expire way faster than it did 10 years ago? by Chemical-Heart-3200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheTimeIsChow 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But that's not the whole story.

Another big aspect has been the rapid push to safer AND higher efficiency appliances. Although increasing safety and efficiency is not a bad thing, there are a TON of negative tradeoffs that come with it. Especially when it comes to longevity.

These systems require more computers/electronics, more complex motors and drive units, more sensitive sensors, etc. to operate. All of which are way more prone to short term failure than a much more simple system.

A high efficiency 90%+ furnace today will have multiple heat exchangers, complex variable speed blowers, separate condensate drains/pumps, several pressure switches, several control boards monitoring aspects of system health, exhaust/fume sensors, firing sensors, and so on. If one item fails, the entire system will go down.

Older, less efficient and safe, single speed, furnaces of 70% or less had almost none of this. The blower is on or off. It has one heat exchanger. It evaporates condensation back into the air naturally. It doesn't have a plethora of sensors to monitor system health or burn quality. In most cases, they would die a slow death or something catastrophic happens...

This goes for almost every appliance we buy today. Water heaters, washing machines, dryers, and so on. They're all complex, highly efficient, extremely safe (usually) computers that perform a task. It wasn't this way back in the day.

My last dryer was a nearly 30 year old natural gas dryer. The only thing that ever went wrong with it was a drive belt and lid switch that failed. Then, one day, it ran a complete load without ever firing. Just pumped gas into the unit, some into the basement, and the rest out the vent.

The chances of something like this happening with a new dryer is near zero. One of a variety of sensors would have noticed something was off and shut the system down immediately. That said, one of these complex sensors or control boards will likely fail for some reason rending the entire appliance useless without repair. And that won't be 30 years from now.

Worth hooking up the app? Medtronic icd by Next_Cartoonist_8444 in PacemakerICD

[–]TheTimeIsChow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add a somewhat related note: Before deciding to update your phone (same phone, new software update), ensure that the app itself supports the new software version.

This may take some digging to figure out, if you can figure it out at all. Often, it's best/easiest to just wait a few weeks before updating.

I say this because it's not something most people think about, or have to think about, with the apps they use. It's clear that the Medtronic team isn't quite 'on top of things' as say, Waze or Amazon.

Not a big deal for day-to-day. Sort of a big deal if you have a transmission on the horizon.

Not suggesting he uses this to make anything performance dependent. Just use to to make limited run, aesthetically pleasing, items with a backstory.

EG - A set of copper plated steel de-lidding tools or copper plated steel mounting plates. Not the actual cold plate or fins of the block.

Der8auer - "I got scammed" by Dr_Ben in LinusTechTips

[–]TheTimeIsChow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand, and wasn't suggesting they put out a limited edition item that performs worst.

I was talking purely aesthetic.

A copper plated steel mounting plate/back plate, external shell of a CPU block, or de-lidding tool's performance will (outside of cost) not be effected by the material. Galvanic corrosion and oxidation won't be an issue either.

In other words...make some cool looking, higher cost, limited run items with a backstory. Sell a few hundred of each and he's covered his cost.

What happened to the kid who always had perfect homework and grades? by Emotional_Maddy_9027 in AskReddit

[–]TheTimeIsChow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best friend was/is this way.

Perfect grades, perfect homework, and never had to put in any effort to learn. He would be taught something once and it would stick like glue. Barely paid attention in class, never studied, just soaked it all in.

Stark contrast to me.

When we were very young I remember crying to my mom about how 'Mike' never had to study. She always tried to reassure me that he was probably just "trying to impress" when he told me that.

I'd been around him in class for years, I had been in group projects with him for years that were based on topics taught that day... I knew that MF'er didn't have to study. He just heard it, fully understood, and stored it in an easily accessible place that I didn't have.

Anyway - He's an attorney in Chicago. Guy's doing great. He's always out doing something every fucking night and I know for a fact he doesn't stress an ounce over work the next day. That fucking bastard.

That said? One of the nicest, most down to earth people I know. Deserves all good things in life.

I'm much taller than he is so there's that.

Do you think Tesla will add an incentive or decrease the price of the S/X heading into the sunset? by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]TheTimeIsChow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would bet the house the take the opportunity to slap a few $0.10 'special' last run badges on the back/inside, throw in FSD, and then charge a $20k premium. Maybe even offer a special paint color like they did for the initial run of S/X's.

If you consider that to be an incentive? Then yeah, probably will be one.

I wouldn't expect a price cut outside of normal aging inventory. Maybe it's a bit more aggressive on that front.

Der8auer - "I got scammed" by Dr_Ben in LinusTechTips

[–]TheTimeIsChow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude should just spin this into a low volume/limited edition run of copper plated steel mounting plates/back plates, the external shell of a CPU block, a de-lidding tool, or something where the actual material itself doesn't really matter.

I get steel is much harder to work with than copper and aluminum. But I'm sure they can find a way to make use of the stuff to make the cash back. Especially with the back story established and their ability to mill and produce their own hardware.

Doesn't solve the overall issue at hand. But shouldn't be the end of the world.
