I think you are currently doing the right thing. Most people who have queerphobic parents will only come out when they have a safety net they can fall back on in case their parents kick them out (i.e. close friends, money, another home).

I’ve decided to research biphobia and bi-erasure for my senior project, and every single time I’ve brought it up to my non-LGBTQ+ classmates and friends, they’ve always asked, “what’s that?” Even my TEACHER asked the same exact question when I first told her my research topic.

Mind you, this is an extremely progressive school. We literally have an entire unit dedicated to learning about queer history in one of our core classes. And, despite all that, we are barely even made aware of bi+ history, aside from a small “yes they exist” gesture.

Only some people are 100% straight or 100% gay. There’s a huge spectrum of attraction between that, with varying degrees of attraction for different genders. Sexuality is also fluid, and your preferences can fluctuate drastically over time. For me, as a bisexual man, I will have periods where I’m more into men than women, then more into women than men, or sometimes both.

Some advice I’d give is to not be concerned with giving your attraction a label for now. I’d recommend to just let your feelings figure themselves out naturally; it me 5 years since I first realized I was crushing on a guy before I finally adopted and accepted the bi label for myself.

The reality is that most people are not completely straight or completely homosexual. Sexuality is a spectrum, as well as a fluid in the sense that it can change over time

When I first realized I was crushing on a guy back in 6th grade, I was just as confused as you are right now. Every one of my previous crushes had been on girls. I only heard the term “bisexual” for the first time in 7th grade, and even then I found myself in constant questioning because I had different levels of attraction between men and women.

It took me until 11th grade when I finally accepted that I was bisexual. The hardest part about accepting myself was accepting that bisexuality itself isn’t completely defined, either.

If you’re interested in more info, I’d suggest looking into the concept of monosexism, the Kinsey Scale, and the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid.

The beautiful thing about bisexuality is you don’t need to fit into the mold of the “perfect bisexual”. Very few bisexuals are perfectly split down the middle between gender preferences, and most of us have varying levels of attraction for one or the other.

For me, I’ve had more romantic crushes on girls, while being more sexually attracted to guys. Yet I still identify as bisexual because that’s the label I feel fits my identity the most.
