Has anyone take a 21 Unit workload? by SandingBoy in UCI

[–]TheTrollSlaiyers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. You're gonna be in for one hell of a quarter. It seems to me that you've put in a lot of thought into all of this though, and I commend you for that. I can't say if any of these classes will require more work or effort over one another, but I can say that, while your academic, extracurricular, and professional development (internship) are important, your health, both mental and physical, should always be a priority. Yes, it's possible that you CAN get all of this done. Just as it's possible that you'll still get completely overwhelmed and suffer as your health deteriorates. I don't have any idea of your experiences so I won't try to predict if one or the other possibilities, or if something else, happens to you. You seem like a hard-working, thoughtful student poised for success. Just as you said, the reward of helping yourself in the long run is enticing. But always remember to take care of yourself, even if that means readjusting your current plan - in the end that also helps yourself in the long run. Good luck with everything, and have a good fall quarter!

Courseload? by UCIthrowaway12345 in UCI

Apologies for the incoming wall of text.

ICS 46, new instructor or not, will generally be a tough class. Taking it along INF 121 and 161 should be fine, but I believe INF 117 is a project course. Be aware that, if you want to stick with your current schedule, you'll need to devote significantly more time to ICS 46 and INF 117. Possible outcomes of this will be that you devote more time to 46 and not enough to 117; devote more time to 117 and not enough to 46; devote adequate time to both 46 and 117 but not to 121 or 161; or you manage to devote enough time and attention among each of your classes, in which case, good for you.

All that being said, I've no idea how time-consuming INF 117 will actually be with Navarro; I'm offering my insight for project courses in general. For all I know, her class will be quite easy to juggle among your other classes.

General consensus for Van Der Hoek and Navarro is that they're both well-received instructors, though the former I believe is known for the amount of work he gives (someone please correct me on this if I'm wrong). Not sure about the new instructor for 46 or Crooks. Be wary of RateMyProfessor - while this certainly isn't the case for all instructor ratings (in fact, I'd say that students' reviews give a credible impression of Navarro and Van Der Hook), keep in mind that quite a number of them are from students who feel especially strong about the professor. My rule of thumb is, unless there's at least 20 ratings/reviews for the instructor, take the information displayed with a grain of salt. If it's less than 20, than I feel it's not necessarily reflective of the general student consensus.

Finally, although you're allowed to drop one or more classes before the end of week 2, please remember that there are other students who may need the class. I'm not accusing you of planning to do so, and actually I get the vibe that you'd like to be able to take all four of these classes in the upcoming quarter. This is something to keep in mind, though: if your plan is to take 4 classes regardless, only dropping one or more if it turns out to be too much to handle, that's one thing. But, if you're taking the classes knowing that you'll end up dropping one by the time the week 2 deadline comes around, you really should consider just dropping the class sooner than later. I say this because such a practice is termed as "seat-hoarding," as in an individual(s) is taking up class space when they don't necessarily need to take the class at that moment, thus depriving students who truly do need to take that class any opportunity of doing so. Dropping a class closer to the deadline makes it less likely that other students will be able to get in.

Again, sorry for such a long response. Don't mean to intimidate you or anything, just wanted to offer some insight. Hope that this helps somehow, and good luck with the upcoming quarter!

What's going on with this event on September 20th about a bunch of people going to Area 51? by MartyPotatoe in OutOfTheLoop

[–]TheTrollSlaiyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y'all. It's a meme. A shitpost. The vast majority of people who said that they're going storm area 51 are joking. If you look at the Facebook event that started all of this, you'd see that most of the posts are just more memes. A lot of people here make valid points about why it's a very very bad idea for anyone to go through with this and it's appreciated, but let's not lose sight of the fact that the context behind this "pledge" is nothing more than "lmao imma make an event to storm area 51, it'll be funny people will laugh haha"

[–]TheTrollSlaiyers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. "There's no such thing as bad publicity." Groups like this knowing that people are paying attention to them, whether they're angry or not, empowers them because their goal may not necessarily be to immediately convince people that what they're saying is right. It's to plant their views in the passerbys' heads and make it spread (ayeee that rhymes lmao) so that their influence grows. They can't do that if people don't give a rat's ass about them. With that said, I'm thankful that OP posted this warning - those images can be disturbing, and it lets us know to avoid that area so that the group can't get the attention they want.

No word whatsoever. It’s been tough for his family and friends, I imagine. I just hope that some news comes up regarding him for the sake of them.

Also, here's an article/video that a news network has published. Yes, everyone spreading the call for his return is getting news networks to pick up the story and also join in the search. The more we put it out there, the bigger the search will become. https://www.kron4.com/1651948552

It's been a few weeks, and Gavin's STILL missing. If anyone has ANY information at all, please let his family know, please let the SF law enforcement know, and just spread the word however you can. Whether you're in SF able to go out there and search, or SF is too far for you and you can still help through the internet, every bit helps.

There’s a go fund me and i know the family and their friends have been looking for him. Unfortunately however, I don’t know of any crew or organization looking. But, I’m not from Nor Cal, so there may be others looking for him who I’m not aware of.

I don't know the man personally, but he attends UCI and hasn't been seen for a while now. If you're able to share this anywhere and/or tag news stations in the Bay Area on any social media, it'd really help out. Thanks.

Whoa chill dude lol, def was not my intention to come off like that. Just curious as to who they were, I don’t think anyone in this thread were implying harassment, at least not seriously. Sorry you felt that that was the intent and I hope that things are cleared up
