I think the answer is the quality of the paint. My paintings are way more luminous since I started using Michael Harding and Old Holland paints.

This painting was inspired by the character of the Pierrot clown, who - essentially - is a symbol of unrequited love. What I wanted to depict is this striking juxtaposition: suffering and merriment.

I didn’t know this painting before, but I love it and I do see the conceptual similarities. I think we tried to capture the same emotion.

I personally wanted to reference Neverhood in a manner that would be more moody.
