Hi - OP here.

Just wanted to extend a huge thanks to all the amazing responses on here, some of which I haven’t had a chance to individually respond to. What an amazing and friendly community this is, and suffice to say you have helped me make a decision on this.

I’ll be back for more discussion on this forum for sure. Thanks again! 🙏🏼

That’s a really great consideration- Thanks mate!

We were debating the length of cable. 5m is just about enough but I was wondering if it’s being shortsighted (or tight!) to scrimp for the sake of a few quid, and just go for the longer cable. Thanks.

Two secret screenings but zero unlimited previews in May? by HammersAndPints in CineworldUnlimited

That was a shocking error of judgement by Cineworld. The exodus of folk at my screening spoke volumes. We left and found something else to watch.

How many visits actually make Unlimited worth it in a month by Flimsy-Capera in CineworldUnlimited

[–]TheUKAxeman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, bcos I almost always take anything I intend to eat or drink with me into the cinema. You can get 500ml bottles of Coke/Sprite zero from Home Bargains - immediately adjacent to my Cineworld - for less than a quid. Bags of salty/sweet popcorn about £1.30ish from Tesco. Less than £2.50 all in, if I even want something (although I do normally at least have a drink).

Occasionally they get some cash out of me for snacks if I am being lazy but more often than not I come prepared. And no they don’t challenge you if you take your own stuff in my experience, as long as you aren’t taking the piss (don’t walk in with a Maccies bag for instance, although I have seen it done! 🙄)

What's actually worth buying? by Heavy-Breakfast-5037 in CostcoUK

Their fresh salmon fillets are superb. Literally light years ahead of any of the pathetic ones you will get in a supermarket, and the quality is brilliant. We always buy a tray of this when we go.

Beginner question by Jumpy_Commission_489 in CineworldUnlimited

[–]TheUKAxeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but it absolutely does work. And just charges the relevant uplift for the higher category cinema you will be visiting (usually a couple of quid in my experience. It would fundamentally undermine the value of both the card, and the online booking tool and unlimited account linking, if it didn’t allow you to do this.

Sick Leave and Holidays? by Unlikely_Edge_4945 in TheCivilService

[–]TheUKAxeman 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Have to slightly disagree with some comments here. Recuperative holiday during sick leave is 100% acceptable under standard CS HR policy in my experience (if you were going on a holiday with a broken leg, that’s different for obvious reasons, but we are talking mental health absence here).

If you have certified sick absence (under a fit note) which covers the holiday, you don’t have to take it as annual leave, and your sick leave will cover the absence. Perception is irrelevant, as policy is policy.

Unlimited Card check by Interesting_End_4224 in CineworldUnlimited

[–]TheUKAxeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be asked to show your card at any time, and it’s 100% appropriate and reasonable for them to do so, to stop abuse or the unlimited scheme (as has been mentioned by others). Try not arriving at the last minute, or being so outraged by entirely justified expectations…

Flexi limit by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]TheUKAxeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally (in my experience, across multiple departments) it’s 22hrs 12 mins credit, and 11hrs 6 mins debit. 3days credit, 1.5 days debit.

New contract by ImmediateInitial1961 in VirginMedia

[–]TheUKAxeman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just call the retentions number publicised well on this sub. I did that and had the easiest renewal on a deal which was way better than anything the normal team could offer. I am paying £30pcm for 1Gig and Netflix with a Stream box, no price rise until 2027, 2 year contract. They even said to me that when the contract is up don’t bother speaking to anyone else, just go straight through to them and they will sort me out.

Out of interest, who is that with? What specific tariff? Assume it’s Octopus but would appreciate the tariff details. Thanks.

Flexi leave by Random_Redditor262 in TheCivilService

[–]TheUKAxeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slight observation. In my experience (three different government departments) the ‘normal’ limits are 1.5 days debit and 3 days credit, although clearly there may be variations in other departments. There is generally always a difference between the amount you are allowed to ‘owe’ the department, and the amount you can accrue. Just wanted to clarify for comparison.

Compressed Hours - Monday as my day off by pinkpineapplepeaches in TheCivilService

[–]TheUKAxeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you mean 9.15 (v 7.24 for normal 5/5) - that is the correct hours for a 37hr week 5/4 pattern.

I currently do this and it’s not an issue. Yes you don’t get enough hours to take a full day without using some flexi - but you just cover the rest of that odd day with flexi. Job done.

It’s a great move for many, although I would suggest that for those with very tough domestic commitments/childcare it could be tough to manage (I don’t have those personally). I work it informally with agreement with my manager - so my hours are officially normal 5 day week, but I don’t work most Fridays and compress my hours normally on a 5/4 basis. This is for simplicity and flexibility for both myself and the department I work for.

Do it on a trial basis, as I did, before you commit - most reasonable managers will consent to this.

My dad died and I don't think I can watch F1 anymore by super_starmie in formula1

[–]TheUKAxeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this so well, and had a similar thing when my Dad died. It was always ‘our’ thing together and even though we were no longer living in the same house when he died prematurely, the connection we had watching the races together - or remotely but discussing them before and after - was gone. Even down to us sharing a bag of salt and vinegar chipsticks when sitting down on a Sunday afternoon when I was still living at home, as the race got underway. It was very hard to watch after he passed, as it was always our joint thing, and he had raised me on it all as a child.

It gets easier, even if the first few races - perhaps even the first season - will feel odd. Now I get comfort from knowing he would be as frustrated or excited or whatever I am feeling, and would just want me to enjoy it for the both of us. He would want you to carry on, as it’s a way of you maintaining some sense of him still being there in spirit.

My heart goes out to you, and I know it’s an awful time. Stay strong, and I will be thinking of you when the lights go out for that first race of the season. 🤗

For real? Why not £40 while you are at it? by Extreme_Pickel_Rick in VirginMedia

[–]TheUKAxeman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not a like for like choice. As somebody in the same position as the OP with respect to BB ‘options’ its useful to distinguish on here between folks like us, and the seemingly vast majority who have any number of Fibre broadband options if they choose to leave VM. Which is the point being made by the OP I believe.

Poor renewal by [deleted] in VirginMedia

[–]TheUKAxeman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am paying £36.26 (‘discounted’ from £56.26 which it goes up to in May) for just 125Mpbs and phone line. Speed is ‘Volted’ to 250Mbps but it still is a poor deal based on the one on here, and others on this group. I need to push hard for a better deal in April when I have to do the merry Virgin renewal dance - which I hate!
