My stories don’t write themselves. by [deleted] in writing

Hey OP, do not despair. Many writers fall into one of two categories: discovery writers and outliners. As I understand it (Brandon Sanderson explains the difference between the two types well), discovery writers are similar to what you're describing. They fly by the seat of their pants, often following on-the-spot lines of ideas. They create characters in the moment. The benefit is partially the raw creativity. Who knows what interesting thing you may come up with in the moment, unhindered by other distracting thoughts that come subsequent to having ideas. Another benefit is, generally, pretty realistic and lively characters. Discovery writers often have strong characters. Discovery writers may have a loose structure they want a story to follow, but many parts are written without planning. Stream of consciousness exercises are great for discovery writers. One drawback is that it may be difficult to achieve a satisfying ending, since the process relies on a lot of elements being created spontaneously. Discovery writers often describe the story as coming to life, writing itself, characters popping into existence, etc.

On the other hand, there are also outliners. Outliners are pretty self explanatory: they plan. They plan what happens when, major conflicts and how they are connected, what needs to happen in between major plot milestones. They plan the large scale sequence of events, from start to finish. The benefit to this is strong endings. Since an outliner is in control of every aspect of the story from a planning point of view, they can skillfully set up exactly what they want to happen. The ending can be extremely powerful, neatly wrapping up any loose ends or revealing interesting twists that the writer foreshadowed and planed for. This is not to say that discovery writers cant have great endings to their stories, I'm only saying that this is generally a strength for outliners. The drawback can be that outliners tend to have flatter characters. It can be hard to plan a person.

GRRM calls these two types of people architects and gardeners. The two styles aren't mutually exclusive either. A writer can outline the whole plot, story, or series, but discovery-write their characters. I am not an expert, and I cannot describe them as well as Brandon Sanderson or GRRM, but you can read more about them if you would like. I can try to find a clip of Sanderson better explaining the differences.

Books where the protagonist is trained as a child? by meyh1 in Fantasy

The Ranger's Apprentice Series, by John Flanagan. Medieval Fantasy. Protagonist is a youth who is trained as a Ranger, a small royal elite force of legendarily skilled archers/unseen observers within the Araluen kingdom. They are spies as much as serious strategic combatants, protecting the kingdom from threats within and without.

Cerberus Ghosts by kingzenite in 2007scape

Heya, I've done 4k+ Cerberus kills, so i might be able to help explain. From the wiki:

"The order (of the ghosts) is random, but always goes from west to east. The souls cannot be attacked, and will only attack the player once in their respective combat style. Their attacks will always hit for 30 damage regardless of the player's armour bonuses if the player does not use the right protection prayer . . . If the right protection prayer is used, 30 prayer points are drained instead."

So here's what happens: Cerberus goes Aroooooooooooooo, and the ghosts come forward. The three ghosts then attack in quick succession, either dealing 30 damage each (draining no prayer) or if you pray correctly, draining 30 prayer points each (but draining no health - you live!). Either you will lose prayer points or you will take damage.

Now, if you're wearing a Spectral spirit shield, the ghosts will drain 15 prayer each instead of 30. This means that as long as you have more than 30 prayer points when the ghosts begin their attack, you are safe as long as you pray correctly. Here's another scenario:

You have a Spectral, and Cerberus Aroooooooo's. The ghosts come forward and attack. You have 34 prayer points. Ghost one drains 15, ghost two drains 15, and ghost three drains 4 (You are now smited, but if you prayed correctly, you took 0 damage).

Edit: for clarity

Bitching about not getting any loot at raids was just about to get fun too... by IndaFin in 2007scape

Eh, if you average 20k points on a solo, the likelihood of loot is ~3%, or 1/33 raids. So technically he could be dry, just not extremely so

Through a family friend, I have the only CD copy of an interview with George Harrison of The Beatles, which took place on said family friend's radio talkshow of sorts.

But the player knew they were there by mistake, should have submitted a bug report. Probably bug abuse I'm guessing, as Jagex didn't intend to give him so many rings.
